9 fashion week trends straight from the Copenhagen runway that we predict we'll all be falling for next season
While the traditional ‘big four’ cities were busy gearing up for their first of 2023's biannual catwalk showcases (New York Fashion Week kicks off today), the last week saw another increasingly influential major player within the fashion week field stage its own runways.
Having just wrapped, Copenhagen Fashion Week has set the bar particularly high for autumn/winter 2023. And, with New York, London, Milan and Paris now preparing to display their world-famous designers' visions for the new season, all eyes are on the four fashion capitals with higher expectations than ever.
But while New York may have Marc Jacobs, London can boast Burberry, Milan proudly hosts Prada and Paris sees Chanel close out the schedule, Copenhagen Fashion Week welcomes Gen-Z approved brands such as Ganni, Saks Potts, Stine Goya, Baum Und Pferdgarten, By Malene Birger and Holzewiler to the Scandi capital each season and, inevitably, there are emerging trends and viral moments aplenty.

“2023 is all about ’All or Nothing’ dressing,” Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimars, Creative Directors at super sexy partywear label Rotate, explained exclusively to GLAMOUR UK. “It’s either very exaggerated, such as: ultra mini-skirts, garishly low rise waist bands, or big ruffle details, or it is minimal, such as: monochromatic dressing or tailoring.”
Of course Copenhagen's appeal isn't limited to the looks making their way down the city's catwalks.
Having made a name for itself over recent seasons as the go-to for epic street style, there are just as many major sartorial moments on display outside the venues as there are inside. So even if you haven't managed to snag yourself a ticket to the top runways, one brief stroll down the streets of Copenhagen during show season should serve up more than enough wardrobe inspo to whet your fashion appetite going into the new season.

DENIM REFRESH
Denim is one of those fabrics that rarely goes out of style, but - being such a staple - it does also rarely see much in the way of a major refresh. Taking things up a notch for next season, however, it seems denim is undergoing something of an overhaul, from pastel-dyed takes to loose-fitting shirts, maxi skirts and even floor-skimming dresses, it's time to up the ante in your denim drawer.

Metallics are coming back in a huge way, and for autumn/winter 2023 it looks like we're going back to basics in the form of golds and silvers. Whether you plump for a sheeny puffer jacket, a fun trouser upgrade or even a full metallic head-to-toe look, as long as it's giving liquid metal you're doing it right.

A super easy trend to embark on next season, it's time to shun your simple knits in favour of something a whole lot more mathematical. Well, geometric, at least. Whether it's stripes or squares, prints are getting a whole lot more formulaic for AW23 and it's the quickest, simplest way to update your go-to jeans-and-a-jumper look.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you're really looking to make a statement next autumn there are few better ways to do so than via some seriously bold embellishment. To keep things on-trend, though, be sure to go for something monochromatic (that's one single colour) from head to toe.

The sheer trend is going absolutely nowhere, but it seems there's one sure-fire way to get it right next season and that all comes down to what can be seen beneath. Thankfully this is a really simple one to nail, as you can forgo any extravagant lingerie purchases and instead layer your sexiest sheer slip atop a pair of fuss-free, low-rise black briefs.

PUNCHY PUFFERS
Puffer jackets for winter may be just about as ‘groundbreaking’ as florals for spring, but for next season they have undergone something of a refresh. Whether you go for a cropped number, a particularly punchy hue or an entirely new silhouette (puffer hoods/scarves, we'e looking at you), there's nothing predictable about the puffer trend for AW23.

Designers have been playing with the fusion of seemingly contradictory concepts for decades, but next season's is one of our favourite. Pairing statement ‘glitz’ with relatively every day knits is a really fun way of either elevating daywear or, of course, of relaxing an evening look. Whether you hit the sweet spot via two juxtaposing pieces or with the season's favourite woven shimmering fabrics, once you strike the balance you're dressed and ready for just about any occasion.

Pastels are often prevalent in spring, but they rarely make waves in autumn. That's changing for AW23, however, with soft yellows taking centre stage. From knitwear to tailoring and even silk evening wear, if you're in the mood to veer from the season's favourite burgundys and burnt oranges you'd be savvy to seek out some sherbet lemons.

One of the most underrated shades you can invest in, brown is finally having its moment in the limelight next season. Such an easy way to embark on ‘tonal dressing’, while it may be one of those colours that goes with just about everything it never looks better than when paired with other varying shades of brown. ‘Caramels’, ‘biscuits’, 'tawnys', ‘lattes’, ‘walnuts’… there's very little that can go wrong with a tonal brown look.
