Bodysuits: The return of the 90s fashion favourite
The return of the bodysuit as a big fashion trend was inevitable. As the 90s revival rampages on, the bodysuit has reared its head - a key item from the decade that taste, mostly, forgot.
Its original fans were Cindy Crawford (remember that iconic 90s Pepsi ad?) Brigitte Bardot (specifically the time she wore one to dance on a table in And God Created Woman) and Audrey Hepburn, who teamed hers with high-waisted cropped trousers. More recently, it's been favoured by Kylie Jenner, Lily Aldridge, Emily Ratajkowski and Rihanna. Sales of bodysuits are up 250 percent at ASOS, with the site currently stocking an impressive 978 styles to keep up with demand.
So what's the appeal? It has its roots in ballet, so has a sleek, streamlined charm. Forget about Mr Motivator and 90s workout stars and the bodysuit is elegant in a very simple, stripped-back way. It looks great with high-waisted denim cut-offs and jeans, as well as full, feminine skirts or 60s-esque A-line styles. They're also great for layering. We favour super-soft, simple versions - H&M, Wolford and Zara all have good options.
The drawback? Unless your idea of fun is grappling with crotch popper buttons, the bodysuit isn't the easiest of items to wear. They take time to put on and remove, which is off-putting for some (me). Some of you may feel that a bodycon vest serves the same purpose (of which we would agree), but we're not here to dictate what you should wear - rather just let you know what's trending and how to wear said trend if you're so inclined.
