Why is protein important for women?

You don’t need us to tell you that it plays a role in muscle repair and recovery, but it’s also a fundamental part of skin, hair and nail health. Jenna tells us that protein also contributes to hormone production, meaning you’ll be less likely to want to kill someone during your time of the month if you consume enough protein on a daily basis.

Why are vegan protein powders important?

Of course, there’s the impact on the environment to consider and how vegan protein powders won't be as harmful as cow-derived kinds, but in health terms, Jenna says: “Protein powder can be useful for those on a vegan diet since they can sometimes struggle to get adequate amounts.” She affirms that vegan protein powders shouldn’t, however, replace whole foods, but that they can be handy if you don’t have the time to count up the macros you’re getting from beans, pulses, legumes and nuts (the highest sources of plant-based protein).

When should I drink a protein shake?

Jenna says the sooner the better after a workout, a bit like eating a protein bar. “They’ll provide a significant amount of support to muscle repair and recovery,” she tells us. “If you’ve engaged in an intense cardio workout, consider adding a source of carbs such as banana, oats or yoghurt to your shake.”

Is vegan protein better than whey?

There are pros and cons. Jenna explains that whey tends to contain a wider range of amino acids, although vegan protein powder blends (which come from more than one protein source) also offer a wide variety.

Which vegan protein is best?

There are a number of different vegan protein powders to consider, each of which appeals to different goals and tastes:
Hemp protein: “Hemp is a lower carb option, rich in copper which is key for energy production,” Jenna says.
Soy, hemp and pea protein: “These have the most diverse amino acid profiles, with soy being the most nutritionally-similar to milk-based products,” according to Jenna.
Brown rice protein: Jenna touts this as the most easily-digested form of vegan protein powder.
