How I tested microcurrent devices:

As a beauty journalist, testing products isn’t just part of my job - it’s basically my personality at this point. For this piece, I started by researching the most talked-about microcurrent devices on the market, before speaking to dermatologists and aestheticians to narrow down which ones were actually worth trying.

Because (very sensibly) I can’t test every device on my own face, I enlisted five members of the Glamour team to help - making sure we covered a mix of skin types, tones and ages.

We approached testing properly. That meant watching tutorials, reading instructions thoroughly, and using each device exactly as recommended. Every tester started with freshly cleansed skin, followed by the water-based conductive gel or serum that typically comes with these tools (non-negotiable, by the way).

From there, we tracked everything: how each device felt on the skin, how easy it was to use, and whether it actually delivered on its promises - namely lifting, tightening and sculpting. We also paid close attention to features like intensity levels, added LED light settings (including red and blue light), portability and overall design.

We documented results with before-and-after photos and videos, and noted both instant effects (like that post-treatment lift) and how skin looked with consistent use over time.

Why you can trust me

I’ve been a beauty journalist for five years now, which means I’ve tested hundreds of products - and developed a fairly ruthless filter for what’s actually worth your money.

I’ve also recently turned 30, and I won’t lie: my interest in at-home sculpting devices has definitely intensified over the past few years. While I do occasionally dip into in-clinic treatments (whether that's for my Botox top up, or professional sculpting treatments), they’re expensive, time-consuming and not exactly convenient – especially with a full-time office job.

That’s where microcurrent devices come in. Yes, they’re an investment - but a one-off one. Over time, they’ve saved me hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds on treatments I’d otherwise be booking regularly.

Most importantly, I don’t recommend anything that doesn’t genuinely work. I’ve seen the difference these devices can make first-hand - both on my own face and across our testers - and I’ve got the before-and-after photos to prove it.

At a glance: Designed to visibly define, lift and smooth the skin, Dr. LEVY Switzerland’s The Contour Pro combines Electro-Muscle Stimulation (EMS) with Radio-Frequency (RF) to help sculpt facial contours and firm the skin over time.

Why I love it: "I really liked how easy this one was to use. I watched the online tutorial first, then used it in upward motions around my cheekbones, jawline and eye area. It’s much smaller than other devices I’ve tried, which actually made it better for targeting specific parts of my face properly - and it’s small enough to throw in your handbag, so great for travelling too. After repeatedly going over each area for the recommended three to five minutes, I did notice a visible difference: my cheekbones looked more lifted, my jawline more snatched, and my eye area more awake. I even thought my lips looked a bit plumper. It’s surprisingly effective for such a little device, and you can properly feel the current working (my eye literally twitched in the video). I also liked that it has three different settings, so you can ease yourself in if you’re a beginner or turn it up if you’re more used to RF."

  • Tested by: Shani Cohen, Glamour's Beauty Commerce Writer.
  • Best for: Sculpting and contouring targeted areas like the cheekbones, jawline and lips.
  • Specs: EMS, RF, three intensity settings.
  • Usage: Daily use, or at least 2–3 times a week.
  • Pros: Combines EMS and RF.
  • Cons: No LED settings or extra massage attachments.

2. Best for Puffiness: Medicube Age-r LED Booster Pro

“Not only does it sculpt and tone, it corrects and brightens” - Georgia Trodd.

At a glance: The Medicube Age-R Booster is the upgraded version of the device that went viral after Hailey Bieber used it in a TikTok GRWM — and it does a lot more than your average microcurrent tool. With four modes — Air Shot, Booster, EMS and microcurrent — plus five intensity levels, it covers everything from glow and product absorption to firming and smoothing.

Why we love it: “I recently treated myself to a few viral K-beauty products and have since been wondering why I didn't do it sooner. The Medicube Booster Pro was kindly sent as a sample for me to test, however, I can safely say I would have bought it anyway - especially after the results it gave me. Not only does it sculpt and tone, but it also corrects and brightens. The air shot mode improves elasticity, the derma shot mode helps to firm, the micro current mode plumps and refines, and the booster mode creates temporary passageways to allow active skincare ingredients to penetrate deeper. While it's pretty self-explanatory once you know what each mode does, it did take me a while to figure it out. The box mine came in didn't have instructions in a language I knew, but after a quick Google, I was able to figure it out. It also doesn't come with a conductive gel for the micro current mode, so you'll want to have one of these to hand if you plan to use it.”

  • Tested by: Georgia Trodd, Glamour's Senior Commerce Writer.
  • Best for: Someone who wants to be guided through the whole process, and a device that does it all.
  • Specs: 10 microcurrent levels (5 come standard on beginner mode; an additional 5 are available by switching to Pro mode in the app).
  • Usage: One to three times a day, however, Air Shot Mode should only be used two to three times per week.
  • Pros: It stops when you move it away from your face which is handy when shifting it's position.
  • Cons: Doesn't come with as many add-ons as other devices (ie the gel or multi-language manual).

3. Best for Sensitive Skin: ZIIP Halo 2.0

ZIIP Halo Facial Toning Device

“Each time I used this device my face felt leaner, less puffy and much more sculpted.” - Georgia Trodd.

At a glance: The ZIIP Halo 2.0 is an upgraded version of the original device, designed to lift, tighten and brighten skin using microcurrent. It connects to an app, where you can choose from different treatments depending on what you want it to do - whether that’s depuffing, sculpting or giving your face a bit more definition. The currents are stronger this time round too, so you can really feel it working from the first treatment.

Why we love it: “I'd seen this device all over TikTok so I was itching to try it. Some of the results I'd seen seemed too good to be true – visible cheekbones after just one use?! Surely not – but as you can see by my before and after pictures, no lies were told. I tested it for two weeks, using it no more than six times a week (which is what the brand advises), and each time I did, my face felt leaner, less puffy and much more sculpted. If you've ever been to FaceGym or had a micro-current facial before, you'll know the process is quite odd; your face twitches and muscles contort in ways you didn't know they could. Hilarious, actually. It comes with an app which explains how to use it in a very digestible way, plus it gives you a whole roster of 'facials' to download to your device (simply by holding it close to your phone) and follow along. You'll receive three conductive gels in the box, which are handy for travelling, but I do recommend purchasing a big one too for when you're at home.”

  • Tested by: Georgia Trodd, Glamour's Senior Commerce Writer.
  • Best for: Lifting, sculpting, depuffing and anyone who wants an app-guided device.
  • Specs: Stronger upgraded currents, app-connected treatments, targeted facial programmes.
  • Usage: 3–5 times per week, with a maximum of 6 times per week for the best results.
  • Pros: Unlike a gua sha, which can take weeks if not months to see results from, I noticed a difference after just one use.
  • Cons: The slight (and only) downside for me is that it's rather expensive, but if you have the money, it's honestly worth it.

4. Best Multi-Use: TheraFace PRO

“This is probably the device that surprised me the most because it’s so much more than just a microcurrent device.” - Shani Cohen.

At a glance: If you want one device that does a bit of everything, this is it. The TheraFace PRO combines microcurrent with red and blue LED light therapy, facial massage and cleansing, so it feels more like a full at-home facial than a single-purpose tool.

Why I love it: “This is probably the device that surprised me the most because it’s so much more than just a microcurrent device. Considering it’s a similar price to the ZIIP Halo, but it features red and blue light therapy to boost collagen production and increase blood circulation (the perfect prep), a facial massage and cleansing ring to cleanse your face with before using the device for a fresh face, and the microcurrent attachment, it seems like much better value for money. I’d say it does take a little time to get used to the device and figure out all the attachments and what they actually do, but the in-depth online app tutorials are super helpful. The microcurrent ring is the attachment I’ve been using the most. The two metal spheres are great for contouring and sculpting areas like your cheekbones and jawline, as well as releasing tension, which I hold a lot of in my jaw – according to my facialist at FaceGym. One thing I would note is that it can get a bit spicy – particularly near the eye area, so make sure to stick to what's recommended in the instructions”

  • Tested by: Shani Cohen, Glamour's Beauty Commerce Writer.
  • Best for: Anyone who wants an all-in-one device that can cleanse, depuff and sculpt.
  • Specs: Microcurrent attachment, red LED light therapy, blue LED light therapy, facial massage attachment, cleansing ring.
  • Usage: 3-5 times per week.
  • Pros: Multiple functions in one device with interchangeable heads.
  • Cons: Not the most travel-friendly – lots of attachments, bulky and can get quite heavy to hold.

5. Best With Red-Light Therapy: Reva Instant Age Renewal Wand

Project E REVA Instant Age Renewal Wand

"I'd go as far as to say it delivers FaceGym results in under five minutes." - Sophie Donovan

At a glance: A high-tech sculpting device that uses electroporation pulses (REP) to help lift, depuff and boost glow – think gua sha results, but faster (and with less arm work).

Why I love it: "I've relied on a gua sha to depuff my face for years — and while it can take the manual device a good 10 minutes to carve out my cheekbones, it gets the job done. So, if I'm honest, I was really opposed to spending £300+ on a device that might not even perform as well. However, the REVA surprised me. Granted, you will need to spend 10 minutes skimming the instruction manual, as it doesn't have the most intuitive set of controls, but after that, it works fast. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it delivers FaceGym results in under five minutes.

"I don't know if it's my lack of beauty know-how, but I expected it to (gently) vibrate - yet, because it uses electroporation pulses (REP) for deep tissue stimulation, you can barely feel it working. But it does, as after a week of regular use, I had already started to notice a difference in the shape of my face and the glowiness of my skin. I also am convinced it helped my makeup go on smoother.

"No, it's not quite as easy to use as an LED face mask, but that doesn't tend to depuff, working better to improve my pigmentation and irregular texture. For sculpting, I'm about to retire my gua sha in exchange for this."

  • Tested by: Sophie Donovan, Glamour's Senior Commerce Writer.
  • Best for: Depuffing and sculpting – especially if you’re upgrading from a gua sha.
  • Specs: Electroporation pulse (REP) technology for deep tissue stimulation.
  • Usage: 3 times per week for 10-15 minutes.
  • Pros: Fast, noticeable sculpting results with minimal effort.
  • Cons: Not the most intuitive to use at first.

6. Best With Heat Technology: Silk'n FaceTite MultiPlatform

Image may contain: Bottle, and Cup

Silk'n FaceTite MultiPlatform

“I really liked that the attachments allowed for a larger treatment area.” - Fleurine Tideman

At a glance: Designed to smooth, firm and revitalise the skin, the Silk’n FaceTite Multiplatform combines three clinically backed technologies — bi-polar radio frequency (RF), low-level laser energy and infrared heat — to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity over time. These technologies gently heat the deeper layers of the skin to encourage renewal and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and sagging. With four adjustable intensity levels, it’s easy to tailor the treatment to your comfort level, making it suitable for both newbies and seasoned at-home pros.

Why we love it: Contributor Fleurine Tideman loved the flexibility this device offers. “I really liked that the attachments allowed for a larger treatment area, so I could focus on my neck as well, which is an insecurity of mine,” says Tideman.

The treatment itself creates a pleasant warming sensation as the RF and infrared technologies work beneath the skin’s surface. While the device emits small electrical “zaps,” the adjustable intensity levels mean you can dial things down if you’re sensitive to the sensation. “The warmth feels quite relaxing,” says Tideman. “The zaps are noticeable — especially around level two — but I personally didn’t mind them. The only time it felt a bit intense was when I got too close to the eye area on my cheeks, which was a good reminder to keep to the recommended zones.”

Results-wise, consistency is key. The brand recommends using the device twice a week for about 15 minutes, making it easy to slot into a low-effort routine. “Using it for 15 minutes can make your arm a little tired,” Tideman notes, “so I found it easiest to use while watching my favourite reality TV shows.”

  • Tested by: Fleurine Tideman, Glamour Contributor.
  • Best for: Stimulating collagen production and improve skin elasticity.
  • Specs: Combines 3 proven technologies: Bi-Polar RF, Low-Level Laser, and Infrared.
  • Usage: Twice a week for around 15 minutes.
  • Pros: Four adjustable intensity levels - tailor it to your comfort zone.
  • Cons: Quite heavy and bulky, so holding it can get tiring.

What are the benefits of microcurrent?

“Microcurrent treatments use low-level electrical currents to gently stimulate the facial muscles and skin. The main benefit is that they can help temporarily lift and tone the face while also improving circulation and encouraging lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness. Many people notice that the skin looks more refreshed and defined after treatment, particularly around areas like the cheeks, jawline and brow. With regular use, microcurrent can also help support overall skin tone and firmness, making it a popular option for people looking for subtle, non-invasive facial rejuvenation.”

How should you use a microcurrent device?

“Microcurrent devices should always be used on clean skin with a conductive gel or serum, which allows the electrical current to travel evenly across the skin and prevents irritation. Apply the device slowly along the natural contours of the face, such as lifting from the jawline toward the ears, or gliding along the cheekbones and brow area. Each area should usually be treated for a few seconds at a time, and most routines take around five to ten minutes. One of the most common mistakes people make is rushing the process or using it on dry skin, which can make the treatment less effective.”

How long till you can see results and how long do the results last?

“One of the appealing aspects of microcurrent is that many people notice a temporary lifting effect immediately after a session because the muscles have been stimulated. However, more noticeable improvements in skin tone and firmness tend to develop gradually over several weeks with consistent use. Because the results are not permanent, maintenance treatments are usually needed, often two to three times a week for at-home devices, to maintain the lifting and toning effect.”

How does microcurrent compare to other technologies like radiofrequency or LED therapy?

“Each technology targets the skin in a different way. Microcurrent focuses on stimulating facial muscles and supporting cellular activity, which can help improve tone and definition. Radiofrequency treatments work by gently heating the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production and tighten tissue over time. LED therapy uses different wavelengths of light to help calm inflammation, support healing or target acne. Rather than replacing each other, these technologies often complement one another and may be combined depending on the individual’s skin concerns.”

What should you look out for in a microcurrent device?

“When choosing a microcurrent device, it’s important to look for one from a reputable brand that clearly explains the technology and provides clinical data or safety certifications where possible. Adjustable intensity levels are helpful, especially for beginners, and a good conductive gel is essential for both comfort and effectiveness. It’s also worth choosing a device that fits easily into your routine, because consistency is what really makes the difference with this type of technology.”

Are microcurrent devices safe to use at home?

“For most people, at-home microcurrent devices are considered safe when used according to the instructions. They use very low levels of electrical current, which are significantly lower than those used in professional clinic devices. However, they may not be suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with pacemakers, certain neurological conditions, or those who are pregnant. It’s also important to avoid using the device over broken or irritated skin and to follow the manufacturer’s guidance carefully.”
