Which jeans should I be wearing this summer?
This summer, denim is taking a brashy, show-off turn.
Gone are the days when your jeans' sole function were to go with everything, or when your denim acted only as a subsidiary to your flashy, floating summer top. Think again: this summer, it's all about making denim your key piece.
Think asymmetric cuts (jagged hems a la Vetements), not-so-subtle frayed cropped hems, and big turn-ups. Alexander McQueen had put embroidered denim back on the map, and there's denim maxi skirts which were massive on the ss16 catwalks, so bear that in mind when you're next in the shops. It's another nod to this season's big 90s revival.
There's also some styles that are going nowhere this summer. Hold on to your straight-leg jeans, your Levi's wedgie jeans and your Alexa Chung-style A-line denim mini skirt. Vetements (yes them again) designed a now sold-out high-waisted, stonewash mini that inspired a few high street incarnations (head to Topshop or Levi's).
It's also time to invest in a pair of 501s if you haven't already - channel a 90s Winona Ryder and you've got the right idea.
Our denim tip of the summer is make the most of Gap's free, in-store customisation service, Denim Addicts, where an expert will offer you styling advice, as well as fraying, hemming, distressing, studding and embroidery customisation. So, if you can't find a ready-made perfect pair of jeans, someone at Gap will create them for you.
