11 best gym bags for 2026 to take you from the office to pilates
Featured in this article
From pilates to HIIT sessions and strength training, exercise is a non-negotiable in my weekly routine, and the best gym bags make organising my day and hitting my fitness goals a whole lot easier — and more stylish.
But when I'm running from hot yoga to the sauna, I need somewhere to put my damp gym clothes without it soaking the rest of my things. Or for a commuter day in the office followed by a barre class — where bulky items like trainers aren’t necessary — sometimes I want a slouchy bag that doesn’t look like a workout bag at all, but also has space for my laptop.
Whatever your schedule looks like, you’ll need something lightweight, ideally with a compartmentalised interior for good organisation and plenty of room for the essentials — your workout clothes, gym trainers or running shoes, beloved sports bra and your emotional support water bottle.
But to track down the very best gym bags, I tried a range of different styles — from spacious backpacks and gym duffle bags to compact travel bags, and elegant totes. Plus, I spoke to design experts on what key details I should be looking for. So, read on to find out which gym bags I've labelled the very best for 2026. And if you're after something else, I've road-tested laptop backpacks and work bags, too. You're welcome.
How I test the best gym bags:
To see how the best gym bags fared in real-life settings, I used each for at least three days. I took them to sweaty hot yoga sessions, reformer classes, and used them on long days where I needed to carry my laptop, gym kit and water at once.
When reviewing each bag, we considered them against the following criteria:
| Size | I considered the size of each bag and how this could work for different scenarios such as heading to a workout class on your lunch break, carrying it with you on a cycle to work, or needing to separate a damp kit from other essentials after a workout — such as hot yoga or swimming. |
| Material | The material each bag was made from was also important. In this case, I looked for materials like shell and nylon that were lightweight and appropriate for holding a damp kit, waterproof options for rainy commutes, and softer fabrics like leather and faux suede that feel more work appropriate. |
| Appearance | The final credential I considered appearance, as I always want my gym bags to be both multi-functional and stylish. |
For those we haven't yet recieved a sample, we asked industry experts whether the pairs selected would get their stamp of approval, and read countless customer reviews.

Gym bag FAQs, answered:
What features should I look for in a gym bag?
“Durable materials, smart internal organization, and comfortable carry options,” says Graham Jackson, director of Product Management at Thule. “I would prioritize a quick access to your essentials and a layout that keeps your gear protected and easy to find. Choose a bag that fits your routine – and everything you need to bring with you.”
Does my gym bag need a separate shoe compartment?
“Absolutely, having a dedicated shoe compartment is a great feature,” says Jackson. “It keeps dirty or wet gear separate so the rest of your bag stays clean and ready for your next session. If the bag doesn’t have a separate compartment, I usually use a packing or gear cube to keep the items separated, something like the Thule Chasm gear cube or the compression packing cubes.”
Are water-resistant gym bags worth it?
“I would definitely say so,” continues Jackson. “Using water‑resistant materials makes a big difference as they help protect your gear from spilling or unexpected weather. This added layer of protection makes sure that your essentials stay safe no matter where your day takes you."
What type of gym bag should I choose — a duffel, backpack, or tote?
Jackson says that the right style of gym bag really depends on how you move through your day and what you’re using the bag for: “Honestly, some days I just use a packing cube as a super‑minimal gym bag. It’s easy to pack and slips right into whatever bag I’m carrying.
"But when I need to bring a change of clothes or gear, I always switch to a duffel.” This style of bag, he says, is both small, easy to pack and to keep everything organized. Ideally they should be easy to wipe clean, too.
What organisational features will the best gym bags have?
“I’d say smart compartments are essential in any gym bag,” shares Jackson. “When you’ve got a dedicated space for your shoes, a secure pocket for valuables, and a couple of quick‑access spots for your everyday items, everything just flows better. It takes the hassle out of your routine because you’re never digging around for what you need — everything has its place, and that makes a big difference."
