These are the best TV crime dramas coming to your screen later this year
We’re a nation of crime obsessives (anyone else lost hours on Netflix's plethora of true crime documentaries?). The grisly, juicy, edge-of-your-seat viewing that’ll keep you awake at night (both out of fear and because ‘just one more episode’ never harmed nobody) are taking precedence on the small screen and the world can’t get enough of it.
From Line of Duty’s generally unrivalled brilliance to Homeland’s pacy plot lines, there’s no denying some of the best shows on telly are of the true crime genre. And that’s not set to change with a string of brand new series to get stuck into later this year.
So, without further ado, here are the crime shows everyone will be tuning into...and trust us, they’re worth cancelling your social plans for.
A Confession, ITV
A murder. A breach of police protocol. Martin Freeman. Yep, ITV’s six-part crime drama has all the ingredients for success. When a 22-year-old mysteriously disappears, a detective breaks police procedure in order to catch the killer. Prepare to binge in one very tense sitting.
Criminal, Netflix
Amongst the MANY epic releases this Autumn, the one to have on your radar is Criminal. The police interrogation drama starring David Tennant and Hayley Atwell is set to give Line of Duty a run for its money with 12 different stories, all of which take place within the confines of a police interrogation room. Oh, the tease!
Dublin Murders, BBC
Penned by Agatha Christie screenwriter Sarah Phelps, BBC’s psychological mystery chronicles the story of detectives Rob Reilly and Cassie Maddox who are called in to investigate two murders in Ireland. Based on Tana French’s bestselling Dublin Murder Squad novels, this eight-part series delves into the emotional connection between cop and crime.
The Capture, BBC
No one pulls off a true crime drama quite like the BBC, and thankfully they’re back with one of the most anticipated series of 2019. Enter: The Capture, a six-part thriller that explores the troubling world of fake news and the extraordinary capabilities of the intelligence services. When a soldier’s murder conviction is overturned, he returns to normal life, but damning footage from a night out threatens to take away his freedom. If you devoured Bodyguard in one sitting, this is absolutely for you.
Liar S2, ITV
The end of season one left us on the edge of our seats with the murder of Andrew Earlman so it feels like we’ve been waiting an eternity for news of season two. Will Laura have committed the crime? Let the speculation begin.
Marcella S3, ITV
Marcella is back! Hurrah! TV’s favourite detective returns for a third instalment of seriously intense antics with Marcella taking on the role of undercover detective, Keira. Warning: do not watch when home alone.
