These are going to be the biggest beauty trends of 2020
It's been a big year for beauty. We've seen CBD-infused everything, bakuchiol went mainstream, micro-channeling patches and glass was the new gloss, with glass hair and glass skin.
But where will the wonderful world of beauty take us over the next 12 months? What will be the defining makeup look? Will there be a new wellness trend to help us in our self care quest? And what new ingredients will we all want in our skincare? We take a look at what will be the biggest beauty trends of 2020.

2020 will see the rise in popularity of one non-surgical cosmetic treatment in particular – the elegantly defined jawline, or “power jaw”, designed to hide jowls and assist tightening of the lower face. "People are looking to enhance their profile without looking overdone,” says facial aesthetics doctor, Dr Vincent Wong. “2019 saw the launch of Juvederm Volux – an innovative filler specially formulated to restore and create volume in the chin and jaw area – offering patients a safe and effective way to enhance the lower face with natural looking results,” he says.

Theatrical, ethereal and experimental, false lashes are going extreme with a little help from feathers, metallic strips and flowers. To nail the trend, take your inspiration from the runways of Valentino and Lady Gaga's Met Gala look.

Perhaps you haven’t heard of them yet, but searches for acupressure mats surged by 294% over the last year with that figure only set to grow. “The acupressure mat is essentially a sheet that holds tiny plastic ‘spikes’ that replicate the needles used within the practice of acupuncture,” explains Claire Taylor, health specialist at Civilized Health. “The mats can erase tension and ignite a deep sense of relaxation. They are especially popular with those who experience aches and pains in their back and the ever-growing situation of tech neck,” she says.

In recent years, nails have become a form of self-expression, with extensions and nail art allowing an array of impressive looks. In 2020, we expect to see even more variation in terms of nail shape, moving past rounded, square or coffin tips into new, more experimental designs including scallop-edged nails.

You’ve heard of aromatherapy, but have you heard of aromachology? As the wellness category continues to expand, scent is becoming a central focus. Studies show that 75% of our daily emotions are influenced by our sense of smell, so it makes sense that brands are looking to tap into that with aromachology – which looks at why and how certain scents trigger a psychological response – taking an even more instrumental role. “In our data-driven and hyper-visual world, it’s easy to dismiss the ‘primal’ effect that scent can have on our mind and body as just another wellness fad, but new studies and research into the brain-smell connection are changing our understanding,” says Clare Varga, author of WGSN’s Key Trend 2020 Science Of Scent report. “We are seeing a new focus on scents that move beyond mere luxury style statement or primal mate-attractor to become powerful ‘functional fragrances’ that can enhance wellbeing, cognitive performance and even physical health.”- @maha.gram / Instagram
Mismatched Eyes
The mismatching trend started with people swapping out one shoe lace with a contrasting colour in a subtle but subversive style statement. Then came the multi-manicure, with nails being painted a totally different shade on either hand. In 2020, the trend will migrate to mismatched eyeshadow, with each eyelid showcasing a different bright and bold pigment.

Next year will focus on the delicate surface of our skin and how our regular products can affect it. As such, “there will be a rise of microbiome focused products aimed at protecting the balance of your skin,” says Dr Jenelle Kim, founder and formulator of JBK Wellness Labs. We’ll get to grips with the microorganisms that make up our skin’s surface (and become less grossed out by the fact that bacteria on our face is not always a bad thing). Brands like Mother Dirt, Aurelia and Gallinee, which centre around probiotics to feed the good bacteria and balance your skin’s pH, will gain in popularity, while mainstream brands will look to venture further into this area of skincare.
