Block heel ballet pumps: Fashion's shoe of desire

The ballet pump is back and it's been given a makeover so strong that's already become a big fashion trend this season.

With a round-toe and heel of no more than 1.5 inches, these are shoes to get things done in (praise be). It started with the Celine spring/summer 2015 show when designer Phoebe Philo showed low pumps in butter-soft leather.

Philo has gained an army of fashionable fans, in part thanks to her modern vision of the stylish woman, who is both sexy and comfortable. Next, hip New York boutique Mariam Nazir Zadeh started stocking heeled pumps in a whole range of hues. And then, during a recent morning meeting at the GLAMOUR offices I looked down and saw several pairs on the happy feet of our team.

High street brands including Topshop, Cos, Office and ASOS have all produced their own take on the low heeled pump, which means there is zero need to shell out on a pricey pair. These shoes are so wearable and so comfortable you may want to buy a couple of pairs.

Think of them as a more flattering, smarter ballet flat. They look best contrasted with more boyish pieces - I've been wearing mine with a boxy knit and Levi 501s or dungarees. Avoid wearing anything too pretty or smart and bare feet are essential to avoid any granny connotations. People often talk about items being wearable, but having worn mine from dawn till dusk without needing to carry an extra pair of flats, I can vouch for this.
