5 unlikely fashion muses that you've never heard of (but should)
It goes without saying, that behind every catwalk collection lies a complex and interesting inspiration. It's never just about the clothes.
Sometimes it can be a mood, sometimes an event or place, sometimes a singular person. This season, five of fashion's influential brands were inspired by five truly badass women - all of whom will change the way we dress this autumn/winter 2016.
From the Italian heiress who used to walk through Venice with two pet cheetahs to the first woman to ever motorbike solo round the world, these formidable characters had one thing in common - a rebellious streak and a refusal to conform to the parameters society thrust upon them. We talk a lot about fashion muses, models and actresses etc, but these women are truly deserving of our appreciation.

Chloe
The inspiration: Anne-France Dautheville
Dautheville - now a 72-year-old French journalist - was the first woman to motorbike solo around the globe back in 1973. Tough, daring and independent, she was a free spirit who couldn't be arsed with visas and would go on mini adventures whenever the mood struck her. Helpfully for Chloe, she travelled in style - wearing leather biker boots, floaty dresses, leather dungarees and vintage tees.
How her look translated on the catwalk: Calf-length biker boots, chunky shearling coats, leather trousers and non-constricting dresses.

The inspiration: Marchesa Casati
Pet cheetahs, live snakes worn as necklaces and dresses made of lightbulbs, Marchesa Casati was the 20th century version of lady Gaga. The Italian heiress used to walk around Venice with her bejewelled cheetahs wearing nothing but a fur robe. She held mad parties where she wore outfits such as suits of armour pierced with arrows, while her servants would be nude and covered in gold leaf. Eventually, her money ran out, but she remained a dandy to the end and was often seen digging round bins for feathers to put in her hat. She was even buried in her eyelashes.
How her look translated on the catwalk: Opulent velvet gowns, leopard print suits, snake-print decorated ankle boots with sculptural heels and feathery chokers.

The inspiration: Edith Bouvier Beale
Edith Bouvier Beale wasn't half an interesting character. She was Jackie Onassis' aunt, so born into a wealthy family. She moved into a mansion in East Hampton called Grey Gardens in 1923 with her rich husband Phelan Beale. They split up a few years later and she was left with a daughter and no alimony. Despite money worries, she refused to give up on her dream to become a singer - a career her well-heeled parents were less than pleased with and they struck her out the will. All Edie had left was Grey Gardens and she lived there in squalor until she died in 1977. She was a non-conformist to the core, never changing her gypsy-like appearance despite the negative opinion of her family and husband.
How her look translated on the catwalk: It was all about the beauty in decay - headscarves made from plastic bags, oversized nubbly knits, sweeping coats, jewel brooches, badges and talismans.

The inspiration: Edith Sitwell
Avant garde poet Edith Sitwell was big in the 20s and 30s and was known for her cutting tongue as much as she was her poetry. When she was young, her father gave her a hard time for having a beaky nose, but rather than shy away from how she looked, she embraced her oddities. She also had a clear sense of style, made up of long flowing robes, gowns, turbans and other headgear, and huge colourful rings. Her clothes were a weapon.
How her look translated on the catwalk: Velvet floral dresses and skirts, lace-up boots with dramatic bows, pussy bow blouses and bows worn as turbans.

The inspiration: Martha Graham
It's been said that ballet dancer and choreographer Martha Graham was as influential to dance as Picasso was to visual art. She was the first dancer to perform at the White House and went on to create what we all know as modern dance. She taught actors including Bette Davis, Kirk Douglas, Madonna, Liza Minelli and Gregory Peck how to use their bodies as expressive instruments. She changed the face of dance, paving the way for direct, intense, angular and raw movement.
How her look translated on the catwalk: Consider the latest Valentino show as the start of this season's ballet trend - think tulle high-waisted skirts, fine ribbed jumpers nipped in with a ribbon around the waist, pastel colours of dusty pink and camel, pleated midi skirts and studded tutus.
