35 best TV shows to watch in 2023, from The Crown season 6 to The Buccaneers

We have always been entertained by the best new TV shows, which provide us with a much-needed sense of escapism from the stark realities of everyday life. Luckily, we have always been spoilt for choice when it comes to what we want to watch, and with the emergence of subscription-based streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, NOW TV etc., in the past few years, there have been more choices than ever before for when we want to curl up on the sofa with a warm drink in hand.
We can't help but notice that the catalogue of 2023 TV shows has been incredible so far, and we seriously cannot wait for all the other upcoming shows in the rest of the year! I mean, first of all, we have some of our favourite shows returning for their next instalments, such as the nail-biting drama set in the world of royals, The Crown and the terrifying series American Horror Story: Delicate (co-starring Kim Kardashian!).
The heiress is set to executive produce the series alongside sisters Elle and Dakota Fanning.

Then there are some big-name movie stars bringing their star power to the small screen, such as Elizabeth Olsen in the limited series Love & Death and Brie Larson in Lessons in Chemistry, which is based on the book of the same name. Oh, and also, like everyone else, we're super curious to check out Squid Game: The Challenge. Eeek!
So you might as well cancel all your pre-booked plans for next year to settle in for binge-watching all the best TV shows for 2023.

Des Willie/NetflixThe Crown S6
Starring: Meg Bellamy, Ed McVey, Rufus Kampa, Elizabeth Debicki, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton
What's it about: Prince William and Kate Middleton's romance will be chronicled in the sixth season. From their first meeting at university to the years following, we will see how the pair transformed into a royal power couple. The sixth season will also depict the final summer of Princess Diana's life before her tragic death on 31 August 1997 in a car crash in Paris's Pont de l'Alma tunnel. However, the actual moment itself will not be covered.
Release date and platform: Part 1 will be released on Netflix on 16 November, while the second part will be available on 14 December.
The Buccaneers
Starring: Christina Hendricks, Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe
What's it about: Think Bridgerton, but with Americans. Yes, this regency-era-style drama will see a group of young Americans disrupt the Victorian London season of the 1870s. With the girls encouraged to find husbands and prestigious titles, they actually set out to do much more than that. Period dramas are our favourite!

A Murder at the End of the World
Starring: Emma Corrin, Brit Marling, Alice Braga, Clive Owen
What's it about: A Murder at the End of the World is a whodunnit with a new Gen Z amateur sleuthing spin, including the central character, savvy tech-hacker Darby Hart. Darby is invited by a reclusive billionaire to a remote retreat alongside eight other guests when one of them ends up dead. Before the killer takes another life, Darby must use her skills to get to the bottom of the murder.

Pete DaddsSquid Game: The Challenge
Starring: There are apparently 456 players, so the full, confirmed list of the cast has yet to be revealed.
What's it about: Squid Game: The Challenge will see hundreds of players competing in a series of games inspired by the hugely popular 2021 Netflix series for a huge prize of $4.56 million (£3.8 million). The stakes will undoubtedly be high as they plan strategies, form alliances and try to outsmart their fellow competitors in a bid to win the cash prize and, most importantly, avoid meeting their terrible fate by getting sent home empty-handed...

It's added that "unexpected alliances form, private truths are weaponised, and everyone is forced to confront their core values both in and out of the newsroom."

Love & Death
Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons and Lily Rabe.
What's it about: Inspired by the real-life story of a housewife driven to kill in suburban Texas in the eighties, Love & Death follows a churchgoing mother and wife, Candy Montgomery, who was accused of killing her friend Betty Gore after embarking on an affair with Betty's husband, Allan. She later said she used an axe in the act of self-defence against Betty, with a polygraph proving it. She was later acquitted on the grounds of self-defence.
