What is a Wolf Moon?

This month’s full moon is known as a Wolf Moon as its appearance in the skies historically coincided with the sounds of howling hungry wolves. It’s also sometimes known as a Stay Home, for more obvious reasons – it’s cold out there at this time of year and, well, no one wants to run in to a starved wolf. That said, the first full moon of the year is a great time to contemplate stepping out into the world again. It’s time to get to grips with where we’re at and where we want to be headed as January limps to a close.

When is the Wolf Moon in the UK?

The Wolf Moon will be visible in the UK on Monday 13 January 2025 and can be seen in the evening, rising high overhead in the evening and the northern hemisphere, with it set to reach full brightness at around 10.26pm.

What is the Wolf Moon’s spiritual meaning?

As explained, the Wolf Moon is named after the wolves that would howl during winter nights. Wolves howl to communicate with their pack and to protect their territory. It is thought that a Wolf Moon offers us greater opportunity for deep self-reflection.

“Spiritually, this moon’s all about reflection, intuition, and transformation,” explains astrologer Betty Andrews. “It’s a great chance to tune into yourself, get clear on your goals, and set some powerful intentions for the year ahead. Full moons always pack an emotional punch, and this one’s no exception — it’s all about listening to your heart and letting it guide the way.”

According to many astrologers, a Wolf Moon can be an emotional time, when several astrological cycles are culminating all at once which can mean you aren't able to communicate or express yourself fully. Some believe that the eclipse component of a Wolf Moon might lead to tensions in your relationships, arguments and misunderstandings. So, if you're feeling a little wound up this week, you can blame the night sky.

What zodiac sign is the Wolf Moon in?

What sign does this full moon fall in and what does that mean? This full moon falls in water sign Cancer which, appropriately, is associated with sentimentality and loyalty. “Cancer energy is all about home, heart, and healing," Andrews says. “It’s protective, like a crab guarding its soft insides, yet endlessly loving and loyal to those it holds close. It’s the kind of energy that makes you feel seen, safe, and supported.”

What better time than January to reflect on the past year as you launch into the new one?

“It’s the perfect time to focus on what really matters to you, let go of the stuff that’s holding you back, and start shaping a life that feels true to who you are,” says Andrews.

How to work with this full moon energy

Here are some rituals to embrace, according to Andrews:

1. Reflect and journal

Take some time to reflect on what has come to the surface emotionally. Use these prompts to guide your journaling:

  • What emotions are asking to be acknowledged and released?
  • How can I nurture myself and create a safe emotional space?
  • What do I want to build or manifest in my home, family, or emotional life?

2. Create a moon bath ritual

Water is Cancer’s element, making it ideal to work with during this full moon. A ritual bath can cleanse and recharge your energy.
What to include in your bath:

  • Epsom salts or Himalayan salt are used to clear negative energy.
  • Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or rose for relaxation.
  • Crystals such as moonstone (for intuition) or rose quartz (for self-love).
  • Write down something you wish to release, place it in a bowl of water nearby, and envision the energy dissolving.

3. Manifest with candle magic

Cancer loves rituals that feel personal and sacred. Use this simple candle magic spell:

  • Choose a white or silver candle (representing the Moon).
  • Write down your manifestation on a piece of paper. Be specific and write in the present tense, e.g., “I am surrounded by love and harmony in my home.”
  • Light the candle and hold your hands over the paper. Imagine the energy of your desire flowing from your heart into the flame. Allow the candle to burn as long as it feels right (always safely).

4. Release with a fire ceremony

Cancer encourages emotional release. Write down what no longer serves you - be it fears, resentments, or self-doubt—and burn the paper in a safe container. As the paper turns to ash, envision those energies leaving your life for good.

5. Meditation for intuition and guidance

Set aside time for a quiet meditation. Visualise the full moon's light pouring over you, cleansing your energy and illuminating your heart. Ask your higher self or guides for clarity on any lingering question
