Adolescence is all any of us can think about or talk about. It's filled group chats, dinner conversations — even Prime Minister Keir Starmer and former England manager Gareth Southgate have been inspired to mention the show.
The show is, after all, much more than just a conversation starter. The four-part Netflix series, shot in hour-long single shots, peels back the layers of what can only be described as a culture crisis here in the UK. The show follows Jamie, a 13-year-old boy, who is accused of murdering a female classmate, Katie. In each episode, we learn a little more about what drove him to commit the crime.
Along the way, the show confronts us with the realities of social media, teen culture, and the growing incel subculture online. It may not be based on one true story, but it does drawn on countless real events from the recent past here in the UK. Ultimately, it offers a frankly terrifying look at what is really going on amongst our young people.

One of the most remarkable things about the show, aside from its harrowing themes, is how it's filmed. Each episode is one long, continuous shot that takes the audience through the Yorkshire town where Jamie and his family live. We float through their home, the police station, the school, the parking lot where Katie was found.

Where was Adolescence filmed?
The majority of the show was shot in and around Pontefact, a town in West Yorkshire. The main reason? To allow Owen Cooper, the boy who plays Jamie, to keep his natural accent — the young actor hails from the nearby town of Warrington.
"We knew it was going to be set somewhere in the north of England,’ director Philip Barantini said to Tudum, “and we also knew it would be from somewhere around wherever our Jamie was from, because it would have been unfair to make him do an accent.”
The second episode set the scene in Minsthorpe Community College in South Elmsall in the town of Wakefield.
Some of the scenes took place in a nearby production park, where the team set up various sets like the police station. “It was a massive, brilliant space, one of the best I’ve worked in, and we were able to build our police station there and also our interview room for episode three,” Barantini said. “It became the nerve centre of the entire production.”
People are calling it the show of the year, and rightly so.
