What to wear to an engagement party to celebrate in style

Deciding what to wear to an engagement party should be the first order of business after the invitation arrives. It’s not hard to find a thoughtful card or last-minute gift, but the perfect celebratory outfit takes time to put together. I don’t have to tell you not to wear white or ivory – I hope, the bride will likely wear a white engagement party dress – but otherwise, there are almost too many options to navigate. Knowing what to wear to an engagement party can be overwhelming and, if you're anything like me, often ends with half of your wardrobe thrown onto the floor. Not to mention you want to find an engagement party ensemble that's giving without pulling focus from the happy couple (just me?).

Before heading down an online shopping rabbit hole, check to see if there’s a dress code on the invite for any guidance to make sure you’re not underdressed (or overdressed, for that matter). If not, the event’s venue and time of day might help steer your styling decision. A black-tie soirée calls for sweeping hemlines and tuxedos, for example, while floaty dresses and wide-leg trousers work for a more laid-back gathering. If you’re still not sure, you usually can’t go wrong with cocktail attire — think semiformal jumpsuits, midi dresses, or a matching blazer and trousers. Chic and easy.

Once you know the vibe, you can have fun with the details and the new season brings us lots of fashion trends to get excited about.

If you didn't try the see through dress trend this summer, it's not going anywhere for autumn/winter. The Dior Cruise 2026 show gave us romantic sheer dresses skimming the catwalk floor. I also love the high-street's lace take on the sheer trend – ASOS, I'm looking at you.

As I've mentioned, tuxedos and blazers can make ideal engagement-party dressing and lucky for us, tailoring is set to be everywhere thanks to the runways of Schiaparelli and Saint Laurent.

Whatever you're shopping this season I recommend playing with textures. Mix sequins with satins, silks or tulle – another material we're about to be seeing from designers and the high street alike. And envision this engagement party outfit as the opening number for your wedding guest dress on the big day.

Ahead, check out our guide for landing on the unofficial best-dressed list for any engagement party.

1. A Classic LBD

It’s a classic for a reason and most likely already in your wardrobe. The little black dress is my tried-and-true favourite ’fit for any semiformal event and an MVP for what to wear to an engagement party thanks to its chic simplicity and endless versatility.

Select your desired length, experiment with necklines, and prepare to rewear it to multiple events. Wear it as a blank canvas, or switch things up with a statement designer belt. Colourful tights, a sparkling clutch, or classic pearls also make for great engagement party attire. Bubble hems are everywhere right now if you're looking for a modern take on this classic.

2. Sheer Style

Sheer dresses have been seen flooding the red carpet over the last few years. The likes of Florence Pugh and Emily Ratajkowski have shown us sheer is sexy but also chic. If you want to leave a little more to the imagination? Don't let that deter you from trying the trend.

I'm loving the lace take on sheer that we're seeing all over the high street, from H&M to ASOS. Simply add sling backs and a statement earring.

3. Lady in Red

Last autumn/winter was all about burgundy, but this year, the fashion set has landed on a brighter red to fixate on. And whilst there might be urban myths about wearing red to a wedding, no one ever said you can't be seen in scarlet at the engagement party.

If you want something that's going to hang in your wardrobe long after the celebration is over, opt for a classic slip dress. It's a versatile style you can rewear again and again – just switch up your accessories to keep it feeling new. We love this cowl neck maxi from A&F.

4. Sequins, Sequins, Sequins

To reflect the celebratory mood in the air, opt for some sequins. This sparkly party-girl staple can take many forms, from a close-fitting minidress to flared trousers, but a light touch is probably the way to go unless it’s a formal event. Sequins shine best when used to experiment with various textures, such as pairing a floor-length sequin skirt with a basic top or grounding a sparkly slip with black leather accents. Although if, like me, you think you can't have too much sparkle, pair a sequin dress with an equally statement bag.

5. A Party Suit

This might sound like a cliché, but you truly can transition any suit from day-to-night with ease. So it’s kind of the perfect option if the engagement party is taking place on a weeknight. Slip on some statement jewellery, swap your office-friendly loafers for strappy high heels, and leave the collared button-down at your nine-to-five — go with a dressy blouse (or no shirt at all). Whether your personal style leans more towards an oversized blazer or a close-fit halter top, any combo works.

6. Texture and Tulle

I'd be remiss not to mention one of my favourite trends this season – tulle. We saw statement tulle skirts dominate the catwalks of Louis Vuitton and Givenchy recently, and it's a much easier trend to wear than you might think. There's something about texture that just says you know what you're doing when it comes to dressing up.

Whether you're in a full tulle skirt with a paired back bodysuit, or an oversized midaxi like this ASOS pick, everyone will know you've arrived, and honestly you won't have had to try that hard.
