Imagine drifting off to sleep surrounded by tigers, enjoying breakfast with lions, watching TV beside an elephant, or sipping champagne next to a baby giraffe. It might sound like a long-haul safari trip, but it's actually what happened when I stayed at the Safari Lodges at West Midlands Safari Park, a truly magical experience right here in the UK.

For many, the dream of a safari adventure feels out of reach, but I'd argue this is the next best thing. Each lodge offers up-close views of a variety of animals, from cheetahs and hippos to rhinos – immersing you in the wild without ever leaving the UK.

Granted, the lodges themselves are a stunning mix of chic design and luxurious comfort, but it’s the views that steal the show. The large, panoramic windows allow you to watch animals roam in their natural habitat right outside your door – a breathtaking experience that’s as close as you can get to a real safari.

My stay at the Safari Lodges

We had the pleasure of staying in the African Wild Dog Lodge, the latest addition to the park's Safari Lodges, and it exceeded all expectations. With expansive windows in both bedrooms and the lounge, you’re accompanied by uninterrupted views of one of Africa’s most-endangered species, the African wild dog.

Naturally, the lodge's décor nods to African style, too – with warm dark oak, cosy lighting and modern amenities throughout. One of the highlights is the outdoor decking area, where you can sit and observe the wild dogs in their habitat. Despite being a safari experience, the lodges are pristine and luxurious – no roughing it here.

This particular lodge can comfortably sleep up to six people, with a super-king bedroom and a twin room featuring a double bed on top, accessed via a ladder. While perfect for kids, the upper bed might not be ideal for elderly guests, so keep that in mind when booking.

Though we stayed in the African Wild Dog Lodge, there are plenty of other lodges to choose from, each offering its own unique animal experience. Be warned, however, that these lodges book up quickly – so if you have a favourite animal or specific date in mind, it’s best to secure your spot early.

Dining at the Safari Lodges

We came prepared with snacks thinking the food options might be limited, but we were pleasantly surprised. During our stay, we were treated to breakfast and dinner delivered in charming glass jars. We had a full English breakfast and a fish pie, both served, surprisingly, in jars – and really delicious.

While you might think it an odd alternative to a plate, the food-in-jars concept is actually a move towards sustainability – our meals were also delivered to the lodges from electric vehicles.

FYI, there's also a kitchen area in the lodge, so you can also prepare your own food.

My verdict

The Safari Lodges at West Midlands Safari Park offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends the thrill of a safari with the comfort of luxury accommodations, all while being in the UK. Whether you’re visiting with family, a partner, or friends, this is a getaway you’ll cherish – I certainly do.

I do have to note that while you’re likely to see animals from your lodge, sightings aren’t guaranteed. As the park’s experts explain: “due to the nature of our wildlife, animals may sometimes rest in areas out of view, especially in certain weather conditions.” But for me, this only added to the authenticity of the experience.

Overall, my stay at the Safari Lodges comes highly-recommended – I'm already planning my return.

The African Wild Dog Lodge is priced from £515 per night, based on two guests.
