While all the hot men of summer are being labelled as rodents (we see you, Barry Keogh and Jeremy Allen White), women have now been given a label too. Well, one of four actually. You see, there are some people on TikTok convinced that women can be categorised into four different types of beauty: Vampire, Witch, Mermaid, or Fairy.

In one video, posted to the video sharing platform by @alltheprettystarz, the user lists several famous actresses under each of the categories. For example, Anya Taylor Joy, Kate Moss, and Halle Bailey are placed under the ‘mermaid beauty’ category (Bailey was a given for this one, surely), while Cher, Lady Gaga, and Meryl Streep all appeared under the Witch beauty category – one user said it was a crime that Stevie Knicks was not included in this category and we simply must agree. As for the Vampire category, the user included Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, and Pamela Anderson, while Gwyneth Paltrow, Elle Fanning, and Rihanna were placed as Fairy beauties.

Which one are you: Vampire, Mermaid, Witch or Fairy?

Fair warning: there doesn't seem to be an exact science to this trend. Honestly, it's more about vibes. Just take this TikTok video that breaks down exactly what kind of people tend to fit into each category.

Apparently, ‘vampires’ tend to be cat lovers (seems pretty witchy, but moving on), loners and night owls with sleeping problems (if you want to call yourself a vampire to romanticise your insomnia, be my guest). Meanwhile ‘mermaids’ are shy romantic empaths. ‘Witches’ are (also) not super social, and are also nature-lovers who tend to stay offline. ‘Fairies,' it seems, are the only girls who actually like hanging out with other people — they are, apparently, bubbly, outgoing and kind.

So, how do you find out which one you are? Well, the girlies on TiKTok are, of course, using a very scientific filter quiz that asks you to choose between things like “black and white” or “cat eyes and siren eyes” — and, voila, it will tell you.

But… why?

Our first question is: why do we need to categorise our “types” anyway?

Well, these beauty ‘types’ are actually nothing new. Some women have always loved channelling their witchy energy — we point you once again to the likes of Stevie Nicks — while others love nothing more than tapping into their inner vamps — a quick foray into the world of 1920s silent movies will demonstrate this. In fact, it could be argued that types like the silent film ‘Vamp’ helped to empower women at the time.

Okay, look: it's nonsense. It's silly, playful, fun nonsense. And with the state of the world right now, we could probably all do with a bit more fun. And, hey, at least none of us girlies are being compared to rats.
