Uglies 2 is all we can think about after swiftly working our way through Netflix's newly released Uglies movie.
Based on a book series of the same title by Scott Westerfield, the film centres on a dystopian society in which everyone is deemed an “ugly” though turned into a “Pretty” through some fairly major mandatory cosmetic surgery once they turn 16. Following Tally Youngblood's story, Uglies explores the darker reality behind becoming a “Pretty”.
So will we be getting an Uglies 2 film, AKA Pretties? Here's what we know about a potential Uglies sequel so far.
Has Uglies 2 (Pretties movie) been confirmed?
Though Uglies 2 is yet to be confirmed by Netflix, the ending of the film definitely leaves things open for a sequel.
Author Scott Westerfeld wrote four books in his Uglies series, with the second being called Pretties and third titled Specials, with his most recent book from the series Extras being a companion to the Uglies series.
Westerfield later revisited the setting later on in his Imposter series, so it's safe to say that there's plenty of material to be working with in further potential films!
In a recent interview, Uglies lead and executive producer Joey King said “There's more books. More books. I mean, there's always, there's worlds in which things that happen,"
She added, "We're really excited for people to see this one, and we're excited for the future of these characters and to see what people enjoy. And really enjoying the moment here.”
Naturally, it depends on how well received the first Uglies film is on Netflix, though we remain hopeful for a potential Pretties movie!
When is Uglies 2 coming out? Potential release date
As above, we'll have to wait a little while for official confirmation that Netflix will revisit the world in further films.
Pulling together a realistic timeline for a possible sequel is also complicated by the fact that Uglies experienced several delays while filming due to reshoots that had to be done in 2024, three years after filming had originally wrapped in 2021.
If a Pretties film were to happen, we'd theorise that it could land sometime in 2026 at the earliest. Obviously this is all very much speculation (read: desperately hoping) at this stage!
Pretties plot
Needless to say, Pretties spoilers ahead.
Beyond what happens to Peris at the end of the film (Chase Stoke's character doesn't have a fall in the books), Netflix's Uglies tends to stay fairly true to the original book's storyline.
In the Pretties novel we see Tally living out her life as a “Pretty”, though beyond the seemingly perfect life something always seems slightly off.
When Tally gets message from her past, she's suddenly faced with what is missing from Pretty life, with her finding herself forced to address things head on while fighting for her life as authorities try to silence those aware of the menacing realities of being a “Pretty”.
Likely Uglies 2 cast
Though a potential Pretties film is yet to be confirmed, we would expect to see the following cast return for a sequel:
- Joey King as Tally Youngblood
- Brianne Tju as Shay
- Charmin Lee as Maddy
- Keith Powers as David
- Laverne Cox as Dr Cable
- Jan Luis Castellanos as Croy
We would also likely see Chase Stokes reprise his role as Peris depending on the outcome following that nasty looking fall at the film's conclusion. Given it's not a feature of the novels, we're hopeful that we'd see Stokes back in a potential Uglies 2.
If a Pretties film were to follow the structure of Westerfield's books, we'd also likely see new cast members introduced to take on the roles of the Crims who feature in the second novel, in particular the leader of the Crims, Zane.
