Production on the new Prime Video adaptation of the Tomb Raider games has been temporarily stalled after Sophie Turner suffered a back injury.
The good news is, her injuries are reportedly “minor” and production is due to resume “as soon as possible.”
Turner plays the iconic Lara Croft in the upcoming series.
Following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who first brought Lara to life in 2001 and 2003, and Alicia Vikander, who took on the role in 2018, Turner is now stepping into Croft’s boots (and braid), and the set photos suggest she’s ready to do the single side braid proud while taking on all the tomb-raiding action we love.
Here’s everything we know so far about the new Tomb Raider series, starring Turner as Lara Croft.
Just wait for the big reveal.

When is Amazon’s new Tomb Raider series out?
The series, which is currently in production, is an adaptation of the classic video game franchise and was originally greenlit at Prime Video in May 2024. But as we all know, this stuff takes time.
Amazon has confirmed that production is underway, but has provided no further details. Given the usual filming timelines, the earliest we'll see Tomb Raider is late 2026, or even early 2027, though fans are already speculating about release dates and potential spin-offs based on the franchise’s rich history.
There is no news yet on whether Turner's injury will delay the release of the series.
Who’s in the cast with Sophie Turner?
As mentioned, Sophie Turner is taking on the iconic role of Lara Croft, with her casting first reported in November 2024 and now confirmed with a series of exciting in-character photos. Turner is best known as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019.
The star-studded ensemble also includes Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.
Adding even more weight to the project is Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. Alongside her, Had Hodge is on board as executive producer and co-showrunner, with Jonathan van Tulleken directing and also serving as an executive producer.
“Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters,” Waller-Bridge said of the cast. “I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”
With this combination of talent both in front of and behind the camera, expectations for the series are sky-high, and it’s clear Prime Video is aiming to make this reboot as thrilling and bold as Lara Croft herself.
Streaming bosses know we don't stop scrolling when we watch TV, and it's led to a “dumbing down” of content. Look closer at Stranger Things and Harlan Coben's Run Away.

What’s the Lara Croft show about?
The first Tomb Raider video game launched in 1996, introducing players to Lara Croft, an intrepid archaeologist and treasure hunter who quickly became a female action icon. Known for her daring escapades, clever puzzles, and globe-trotting adventures, Lara has been a staple of gaming culture for over two decades.
The most recent game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018), follows Lara as she navigates dangerous tombs and uncovers ancient secrets while facing deadly adversaries. Over the years, many of the original classics have been remastered, letting a new generation experience Lara’s iconic adventures.
Looking ahead, two new games are slated for release: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (2026) and Tomb Raider: Catalyst (2027). These promise fresh stories, high-stakes exploration, and the trademark mix of action, puzzle-solving, and heart-pounding adventure that fans know and love.
What a time to be a gamer or a Sophie Turner fan! With the series promising epic adventures and a star-studded cast, we can’t wait to see Lara Croft come to life.
