If you've ever been dumped, chances are, you've had fleeting fantasies about seeking your revenge. About making the other person feel just a bit of your pain. And, chances also are, you've quickly snapped out of it and turned your focus to moving on. But in Paramount+'s The Revenge Club, that fantasy is simply too tantalising to ignore – and what begins as a fun little flirtation with a little harmless romantic revenge soon spirals into a full-on crime thriller.

Based on The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington, the show follows Aimee-Ffion Edwards, who you may recognise as Shirley from Slow Horses, as Emily, an ex PR exec whose life spins out of control after her best friend has an affair with her husband. (And who can blame her?) She finds herself in a support group for divorcees. And the group certainly make an odd bunch. Alongside the prim, proper (and spiralling) Emily, there's the grumpy roofer Calum (Martin Compston), the quiet but somehow sinister Rita (Meera Syal), the peppy and a little ditzy Rachel (Sharon Rooney), the old-school ex-army sergeant Steven and the youngest of the group Tej (Chaneil Kular).

The one thing they do have in common is the sense of being severed unceremoniously from their lives thanks to their unfeeling exes – along with a growing fatigue with the group leader's meaningful HR-approved therapy speak-laced platitudes about “healing” and “acceptance.”

Over a series of glum pints at the local pub after their meetings, the group realise that what they really want is not to accept their fates, but rather, to form what is, Calum says, “basically a pound shop Ocean's Eleven” and seek revenge. First up is Emily's ex-husband and bestie. They plan out a Home Alone-style heist involving a fake tarot card reader, spooky music and a pile of rats. The ex-husband and ex-bestie and sufficiently freaked out and make plans to vacate Emily's home. A success!

Ominous flash forwards showing Emily in a police interview hint that things take a sinister turn and that – well – “people die.” So, yes, it's going to get dark, but rest assured, the show keeps its biting, wry wit the whole way through. Consider us hooked.
