The Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare has revealed that having her books made into films is "surreal" and she thought it would "never really happen".

"'Surreal' is the word. My husband says it's like being at Disneyland where all of the rides are based on my book. It has gone through a long process," the writer revealed in Toronto.

"My grandfather was a movie producer. I grew up in the film industry. I always knew movies aren't really happening until they're actually filming, and I thought this will never really happen."

"Then when they got [director] Harald [Zwart] on board, I really started to believe it could because he has such a passionate commitment to the project, and he's a very emotion-focused director.

"He really wanted to focus on the characters and their relationships to each other with the special effects second. And I thought that was a really great quality in a fantasy-film director."

The Mortal Instruments follows teen Clary Fray, played by GLAMOUR Cover Girl Lily Collins, who learns she has hidden talents when her mother disappears.

Speaking in the September issue, Lily says: "I'd love to play Clary again and again because I love her, and if what happens with Mortal Instruments is anything like what Jennifer and Kristen have gone through, then I think that's just a by-product of doing something that I love."

The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, which also stars Jamie Campbell Bower is released on 21 August.
