Sydney Sweeney is booked and busy. From Euphoria season three to Christy, she’s stretching her acting chops — and appearing in much-discussed jeans campaigns. But one role stood out for Sweeney in 2025: The Housemaid.

Adapted from Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, the thriller stars Sydney as Millie Calloway, alongside Amanda Seyfried (Nina Winchester), Brandon Sklenar (Andrew Winchester), and Michele Morrone (Enzo Accardi).

Released in late December, the film was a massive hit, grossing nearly $400 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It smashed expectations, broke Sydney’s streak of box office misfires, and became her highest-grossing starring role, surpassing Anyone But You. For director Paul Feig, it’s even bigger than Bridesmaids — and who isn’t obsessed with that movie?

In a surprise twist, the sequel is already in development, and it’s coming much sooner than fans might expect. Here's everything we know about The Housemaid's Secret, including a confirmed release date.

What is The Housemaid's Secret about?

The sequel will adapt the second book in McFadden’s series, which is also titled The Housemaid’s Secret.

The book synopsis reads, “It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want. It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything…”

Who will be in The Housemaid's Secret?

Sweeney will reprise her role as Millie in The Housemaid’s Secret, while Michele Morrone also returns as Enzo, the brooding, mysterious Italian groundskeeper at the Winchester home.

Much to fans’ disappointment, Nina and Andrew Winchester do not feature in the novel the sequel is based on. (And, spoiler alert, Andrew died at the end of the first film.) There’s been no official word on whether Amanda Seyfried or Brandon Sklenar will return, but given the film’s slightly altered ending — which sees Millie take on a new job signing on to help a wealthy woman in trouble — we wouldn’t be surprised if Seyfried makes some kind of appearance.

We do know that Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, Bring It On, and The Virgin Suicides) has joined the cast, and we’re predicting she’ll step into the role of the new matriarch of the household. Paul Feig also returns as director, promising another glossy, twist-filled thriller. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book, will also return to adapt the sequel film.

When will The Housemaid's Secret be released?

Per Deadline, The Housemaid’s Secret is set for release on December 17, 2027. While that may feel like a long wait, it’s already shaping up to be a crowded date at the box office. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum are both currently scheduled for the same day.

And in case you were wondering, Lionsgate has already optioned the third book in McFadden's literary trilogy, so there's another sequel possible after this one.

In the meantime, The Housemaid is available to rent or purchase on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
