Sydney Sweeney is defending the 60th birthday party she threw for her mum.
On August 27, the Euphoria star faced online backlash over a series of photos she posted from her mum's surprise hoedown-themed 60th birthday party. Specifically, fans noticed Sweeney smiling with a man in a Blue Lives Matter T-shirt. “No better way to celebrate my momma than a surprise hoedown,” Sweeney captioned the Instagram post.
In further photos of the party shared by Sweeney's brother, guests could be spotted wearing red MAGA-inspired hats that said “Make Sixty Great Again,” which some critics took as evidence of pro-Donald Trump sentiment. While Sweeney documented most of the party on her Instagram stories, including “jean jacket goodies” from Levis, she did not post photos of the hats on her own account.

Sydney Sweeney responded to the discourse on Twitter, writing, “You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mum's milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone ♥️ and Happy Birthday Mom!”

This did not dissuade many Twitter users, who have continued to post critiques and Euphoria-based memes. “The Sydney Sweeney thing just reminds me of what Blk folk mean when we say 'a difference of opinion in friendship is apples & oranges, NOT political views,'” one Twitter user wrote. ”Because how can you not be [racist] when you’re smiling next to ppl wearing blue lives matter shirts & fake maga hats?"
