Bye bye contour sticks.

For too long, makeup has been about pursuing perfection with surgical precision for the 'gram. The best spring makeup trends 2026 are a little less precious than that. Rather than life imitating art, makeup with deliciously worn-in, hazy textures is imitating life.

It’s one of the most refreshing shifts the beauty world has seen in a long while, whether you want to call it makeup's anti-filter era or just plain old real – like the wobbly eyeliner many of us apply one-handed on the way to work.

Here are seven spring makeup trends 2026 that you'll want to jump on straight away to be ahead of the curve – and seven you'll want to retire with your winter jumpers.

In: Myspace glitter

Out: Clean girl

Forget 2016, it's all about 2007 this spring. Much has been made in recent months of Millennials' nostalgic craving for life pre-social media and going-out makeup that no longer strives for filtered perfection. It seems the beauty world has listened and is ushering in makeup looks anchored in what Chelsea Mtada, a trends analyst and strategist at Seen Group, calls “late night energy”.

Think messy lashings of glitter on the eyes like you used to see on Myspace; glossy just-bitten lips and imperfectly fanned-out lashes that mimic what your mascara would look like at 4 am if you were dancing in a sweaty club with Addison Rae.

“Desire is now coded in sweat, sex, chaos and excess; the clean girl is dead, replaced by the party girl with glossy bitten lips, explosive hair and glitter that catches club lights, not filters,” says Chelsea. This attitude to makeup, she notes, is more “erotic, chaotic and free” and “reimagined for the post-perfection era.”

Out: Crisp lines

“Smudged, lived-in textures” define spring 2026, says Becky Moore, lead artist at Nars. Better still, there's not just one way to lean into the aesthetic. For a soft-focus romantic look, you could lean into the ‘cloud lips’ trend that's currently going viral, where fingertips are used to smoosh balmy rosebud shades onto the mouth before smearing the edges. Imagine a Bridgerton post-snog lip, and you get the picture.

Lip liner is OK, too, as long as it isn't drawn on in as a crisp, tidy outline - blurring it out gives lips a pillowy plumpness.

You could also make blurry, just-kissed lips look more soft-focus grunge by playing with different textures and creating contrasts with the rest of your makeup.

“Soft matte powders set and subdue, giving skin that ’90s-inspired finish with modern polish," says Becky. “While chunky, layered lashes contrast with blurred, balmy lips for soft sensuality,” she notes, adding that she also likes to use her fingertip to blur the Nars eyeshadow sticks “for that imperfectly perfect haze. The result is moody but effortlessly cool — the grunge comeback you didn’t see coming.”

In: Denim blue

Out: Beige neutrals

Blue eyeshadow is a trend that's been bubbling away in the background for a few years now. There's been audacious ‘80s-coded cobalt blue and ’90s washes of frosted azure blue. Now denim blue is set to become the It-girls' favourite iteration for spring 2026.

If further proof were needed, Chanel has jumped on the trend, launching its Coco Denim makeup collection, which takes the shade away from just the eyes to the face, nails and even lips, depending on what you want your denim wash to look like: soft and faded; raw and playful or structured and classic. There's a pearly blue highlighter to impart a cool sheen on the high points of the face - cheekbones, bridge of the nose and brow bone - a royal blue mascara and even a lip balm that reads icy and light-reflecting rather than blue on your mouth.

In: Baked bronzer

Out: Sunny glow

The word ‘bronzer’ is often used in the same sentence as ‘sun-kissed glow’. If the Michael Kors SS26 runway is a barometer of how and where we'll be adding bronzer this spring, then that's all about to change.

While makeup artist Dick Page still used bronzer to add sunny warmth to the models' faces, clouds of terracotta powder were buffed into the pads of the cheeks, down towards the mouth, rather than high on the tops of the cheekbones. The texture? Creamy yet matte – so it looks earthy and like you've come out of a sandstorm – rather than glam. Finish with a sweep over your eyelids, too, for a monochromatic effect.

Out: ‘Tired girl makeup’

In autumn 2025, ‘tired girl makeup’, with its primary focus on faking the look of dark circles with creamy red pigment, went TikTok-viral. This spring, we're embracing the opposite end of the 8-hour sleep spectrum. Enter ‘sleepy girl’ makeup, which concentrates its efforts on recreating that snoozy flush on the apples of your cheeks when you wake up. It's all about lived-in softness and being quietly sexy.

A gel or cream blusher (Rhode Pocket Blush in Sleep Girl is a brilliant fit for this trend), that melts into freshly moisturised skin, is a good starting point. Better yet, skip foundation and only use concealer or tinted moisturiser where you need it. And, instead of harsh eyeliner, switch to neutral tones of soft brown or even muted pink eyeshadow to add subtle definition around the eyes.

Out: Contouring

If you've seen Wuthering Heights, you'll no doubt be as obsessed as me with Margot Robbie's Victorian-coded version of boyfriend blush: Brontë blush. “It's like the blush is radiating from within, making you look like you've been running outside in the cold,” says makeup artist Zoë Moore of the look.

Instead of using contour sticks in painterly strips to accentuate your bone structure, or concentrating your blusher in a C-shaped curve over the tops of the cheekbones, spring's mood is more natural and outdoorsy. Brontë blush "sits lower on the cheeks and travels down towards your lips,” says Zoe.

The tones are also designed to be more ruddy, so you can retire your ballet slipper pink shades in favour of berry and cherry hues. Consider a double-blush situation, too, first laying down a cream or balmy blush and then topping it off with a dusting of powder blush to lock the colour in.
