When the wolf cut took off, we were obsessed. The ultra choppy shape is fierce, shaggy and just.so.cool. But, it's also a huge commitment. The ‘soft wolf cut’ though? Well, that takes everything we know and love about its big sis, but softens it out into something a lot more wearable.
Don't get us wrong, we love the OG. You just have to have the audacity to wear it. For the uninitiated, the style is a mash-up between two of the most drastic cuts trending right now: the ‘70s shag and the ’80s mullet, brought together in a very modern collab. As the name suggests, it's a little wild, and while the disconnected layers create some pretty incredible volume, the shorter sections mean you have to commit to the cut for a long stretch in order to grow the cut out.
The edgy cut is back for 2026. Here's all the inspo you need.

The ‘soft wolf cut’ effectively nods to the shape, but with elongated layers that can blend back into hair more quickly if you like to switch things up frequently, or if you want a style you can tie back without stubby little hair fronds escaping. Or, if you just want something a little more wearable.
While the original haircut already has a fan following of edgy celebs like Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus, it looks like JLo's just jumped on board the new rendition in the trailer for her latest film, Shotgun Wedding.
The poster shows Jen looking “dishevelled” (in the glossiest JLo way possible). Her forehead is smudged with dirt, her dress is torn and her hair is roughed up with mussy layers that give a sexy, choppy voluminousness but – bonus – are long enough to still feel approachable. It's leaning into the glam grunge aesthetic we've seen rise on TikTok. Plus, it's the perfect timing for the cut to reclaim the spotlight.

“Autumn often sees the return of layered cuts paired with a range of fringes,” explains Tyler Moore, expert hairstylist at Live True London. “Salons are already starting to create more bold and interesting takes on the style of the season,” he adds. And, the heavier layering, particularly around the face, with some choppy sections through the back, lean into the anatomy of the wolf cut, only softer.

“The soft wolf is one of our most in-demand styles at the moment,” confirms Tyler. As for what to tell your hairdresser, “ask for longer and softer layers, combined with an easy bottleneck fringe or face-frame to create the overall silhouette,” Tyler says.

Even better, the cut takes care of most of the hard-work when it comes to styling. “A soft wolf cut gives a gorgeously effortless and textured style, so it’s best to not over-style and incorporate products that will introduce natural movement to the hair,” says Tyler. “Introducing a loose wave is a good way to make the most out of this style,” he says. This will give it a more polished, glam finish. But air-drying with products like Amika's Curl Corps Defining Cream and Briogeo's Banana + Coconut Soft Wave Texture Spray, that encourage your hair's own movement, will help it look and feel really natural, organic and effortless.

As for who it suits, it's ideal if you're lazy when it comes to styling. “The Soft Wolf cut is perfect for the low-maintenance lover who wants a bit of edge for their next look. It works especially well when paired with a bob length or naturally wavy/curly hair,” says Tyler.
Wearable, glam, edgy and low-maintenance? So, dream haircuts really do exist.
