Selena Gomez is no stranger to a hair transformation. She's see-sawed between long hair and a sleek, flippy bob for years, more recently sporting a grown-out lob worn in an deep side part. But now she's in a new bob and bangs era.
On June 23, the Rare Beauty founder took to Instagram with a selfie showcasing a brand new – and unexpected – hairstyle. Wearing a white fluffy bathrobe she debuted a wolf cut, a haircut characterised by wild, choppy layers that's the lovechild of a 70s shag and the 80s mullet.
As Selena demonstrates, the cut is shorter around the crown to create volume, while longer strands are reserved for the back.

Her '70s shag is the work of legendary hairstylist Orlando Pita and lends her overall look a soft-yet-edgy bedhead vibe. Selena even embraced a brow-skimming fringe and leant into the airy cloud curls trend to really switch things up.

Hung Vanngo, her long-time makeup artist, also took to Instagram with a candid snap captioned, “New hair, who dis?”, while ensuring that the makeup also lent into what we're calling Selena's new '70s glam-rock aesthetic. Think elongated brown wings on the eyes, a pretty peach flush on the cheeks and a punchy orange lip.

Of course, this isn't the first time Selena has sported tousled layers. Nor is it her first time experimenting with bangs. In the past, she's sported '90s bangs with their telltale root lift and a wispy fringe. And, only last year, she debuted a set of long, '70s style curtain bangs at the “Lola” movie premiere.
But Selena's new messy layers are a marked departure from the sleek bobs and lobs she has had on rotation of late, where there wasn't a hair out of place. So is this Selena's haircut of the summer?
Actually, no. Selena's own caption to her Instagram post gave the game away: “I would, but I’d regret it, then get it redone so I simply wont #bangs”. So spoiler alert, it's a wig! But that doesn't mean the haircut isn't taking pride of place on our mood boards.
