It seems the bob is always on our bingo card these days – whether it's the French bob or a boho bob. Selena Gomez is the latest celebrity to succumb to its siren call, joining other celebrities, including Zendaya and Kendall Jenner, in embracing a new crop for autumn.
On October 20, the Only Murders In The Building star served up not one, but two, trending looks at the Academy Museum Gala 2024.
The first was sartorial, with a peek-a-boo bra moment on the red carpet. Following in the footsteps of Scarlet Johansson and Sydney Sweeney, who have previously co-signed the lingerie trend, Selena Gomez accessorised a navy suede Alaïa halter neck dress with an exposed leather bustier.
The second – and what really caused a stir – was Selena’s freshly-chopped bob. Hovering just above her shoulders and worn in a deep side part, it was defined by dramatic flipped-out ends, which were so razor-sharp and exaggerated they looked like wings.
It was a marked switch up from the casual, bouncy bob she debuted earlier that day at the BAFTA screening of her new film Emilia Pérez in LA – proving just how versatile this hairstyle is.
It’s not the first time Selena has flirted with a bob. In fact, over the last few months she has been on a hair loop, yo-yoing between a bob and longer lengths.
Back in January, she wore her hair in a grown-out lob to the AFI Awards with a side part and layered waves that skimmed her clavicle. Then in March she shared a selfie on Instagram that revealed a significantly shorter bob with the ends curled softly upwards, fuller mid-lengths and layered ends that resembled more of a face-framing mushroom bob.
Last night, the shape of Selena's bob took a different direction, though. It had a touch of retro about it, with the slightest of nods to the '60s. But her long-time hairstylist Marissa Marino ensured the high-shine lacquered finish, that stopped just short of being wet look, gave it a futuristic feel, too.
Her space-age silver earrings also leant into this aesthetic, while her makeup – a softly smoked-out eye and glossy peach lips – added to the striking look.
Selena Gomez is firmly back in her bob era and its a Love On for us.
