The brand new Scream movie is just days away – in news that will no doubt delight horror film fans everywhere.
Scream (2022), which is stylised as 5cream, is the fifth from the slasher/thriller franchise – and it marks the return of the Scream films after a 11 year hiatus (the last was in 2011). It will be directed by duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, and see much of the core Scream actors return (including Courtney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell) alongside rising stars such as Sonia Ammar.
It's received positive reviews from the critics already, and a 93% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes – which isn't too shabby.
Note that it is known as Scream, not Scream 5, as lead actor Courtney Cox made clear in a sliiightly confusing interview last year, on Drew Barrymore's talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.
“Scream, this is the fifth one. It's not Scream 5 though, this is Scream. These directors are incredible, they're making it absolutely, it's a new franchise. It's hip, it's scary, it's just a new Scream. It's not a reboot, it's not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s going to be fantastic," the actor said.
So, make of that what you will… In any case, it looks like the makers are keen to do something fresh with the franchise, which is the first that won't be directed by Wes Craven (who died in 2015).
There has also been a lot of Twitter buzz around the new film, with fans rejoicing about the franchise's return.

The slasher flick will be debuting on the big screen from the end of this week. Here's everything you need to know about it…
Cast
Scream veterans Courtney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell, both of whom have starred in all four of the previous Scream films, will return. They will be acting alongside a fresh line-up of newcomers, including French model/singer Sonia Ammar, Jenna Ortega (13 Reasons Why, You), Dylan Minnette (also 13 Reasons Why, Ghostbusters), and Mikey Madison (Better Things, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood). Marey Shelton, who formerly appeared in Scream 4, will be making a second appearance.
While the late Wes Craven obviously wasn't involved in the filmmaking, the new Scream film will also see Keith Williamson, the creator of the original 1996 Scream film, acted as an executive producer.
Plot
According to the trailer, the plot follows is a nod to the Scream films that came before it, with a teenager receiving a mysterious (and, as it turns out, foreboding) phone call while alone at home. Cue horror/slash action.
“Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past," reads the official film synopsis.
There's also the usual element of mystery. As Scream fans will know, it's key that the identity of Ghostface is hidden from the characters throughout the film – and, according to behind the scenes gossip, even the cast members weren't allowed to know the actor's identity during filming.
"We were really careful to protect the big reveal of the movie. We went as far as to withhold those moments in the script from the actors," co-director Tyler Gillet told Entertainment Weekly.

Scream will be coming out this Friday 14 January – so book your tickets now (and, top tip, if you're a wuss like us, maybe take a blanket or something along to hide behind…)
