At the 2016 Oscars, Sam Smith won an Oscar for "Best Original Song" for Spectre's Writing's on the Wall. Congrats, Mr Smith.
While on stage, the singer songwriter cited a recent statement by Ian McKellen about the lack of openly gay actors to win an Oscar.
"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an oscar," Smith said in his speech. "If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world."
It would appear that Sam was under the impression that he was the first gay man to win an Oscar. That's not the case.
One person in particular called him out on it, Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (who is engaged to diver Tom Daley) tweeted: "Hey @SamSmithWorld , if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here's a start:" He sent this out to the Twitterverse with a link to a youtube video of his own Oscars acceptance speech from back in 2009.
