Robert Pattinson was a British actor cast adrift in a sea of Aussies at an awards event in Los Angeles yesterday. So, you know. He made a spectacular impression by cracking the lewdest joke of the evening at the expense of a one Mr R. Kelly.

The star was presenting an award to Blue Tongue Films (the production company behind his forthcoming movie The Rover, which was shot Down Under) at the Australians In Film gala just after Isla Fisher, who presented an Orry Kelly International award to Baz Luhrman.

Fisher compared the title of the prize she dished out to that of RnB singer R Kelly.

Seizing his opportunity to inject some humour into the proceedings, Pattinson said he was annoyed that Fisher got there first with the R Kelly quip, before jokingly referring to the award he was presenting as "The R Kelly Golden Shower Award".

No, we're not sure we get it entirely, either.

But the rest of the audience did, howling and roaring with laughter in their seats as, we imagine, they slapped their thighs in thespian glee.

Pattinson then mused out loud over whether he should roam off-piste completely and ditch his "insanely generic" written speech, such was the popularity of his opening line. But the crowd were having none of it, and urged the would-be comedian to read on regardless.

You can just about make out Pattinson's joke in the video below if you listen really carefully:

Pattinson is set to star opposite another Aussie actress, Nicole Kidman, when he begins filming for Queen Of The Desert in Morocco next year.

The Rover, which was directed by David Michôd, is currently in post-production.
