Netflix's Ransom Canyon may have only just dropped, but we're already in deep. A 10-episode romantic Western drama centring on Quinn O' Grady (Minka Kelly) and Staten Kirkland (Josh Duchamel), the series follows the pair as they address a looming threat to their strong community.
As per Netflix, "Love, loss, and loyalty collide when three ranching family dynasties fight for control of the land. Their lives and legacies threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life".
A sweet spot somewhere between Yellowstone, Virgin River and general cowboy vibes, this series has all the right ingredients to be a hit. But what really caught our eye when watching the show was the dramatic landscapes that feature throughout.
Speaking in an interview with Netflix's Tudum, Ransom Canyon's creator April Blair said that Ransom Canyon is much more than just a town, explaining “It’s an idea. It’s the painful longing for your first love. It’s the burning desire to protect your family. It’s cowboys and lovers, grifters and thieves. Lust, deceit, heartache, home… Ransom has it all.”
It's a tick, tick and tick from us.
On the location, Blair added, "I think people are going to fall in love with this little slice of Texas and the dramas and romances that we created there."
But while the series is set in Texas, where was Ransom Canyon filmed in reality? Buckle up cowboys and girls and let's get into all the dreamy Ransom Canyon filming locations.
Where is Ransom Canyon filmed?
In line with the book that the series is based upon, the series is set in Ransom Canyon, a fictional ranching town based in Texas. So while you'd be forgiven for expecting the show to be filmed there, you'd be sorely mistaken.
In fact, much of the filming for Ransom Canyon was done in New Mexico, specifically cities such as Las Vegas, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Albuquerque.
In an interview with Tudum, the show's lead Minka Kelly said “I’ve never had to shoot in Albuquerque until this show. I was afraid to go back because I hadn’t really been there since my childhood, which wasn’t the best.”
She explained, "Going back in this way just took away the boogeyman. There were places I visited from my childhood that I would think, 'Man, if the Minka at that time would have ever imagined I’d be back here shooting this show, I never would have believed it.' It was really beautiful and there’s something divine about it."
Netflix's Albuquerque production hub specifically provided the backdrop for much of the series, though Ransom Canyon also filmed in real working ranches nearby Santa Fe like Bonanza Creek Ranch and Blame Her Ranch in Ribera.
In a recent interview, actor Jack Schumacher said of the Ransom Canyon filming locations “It's a really gorgeous area. And when you're out riding a horse through this scenic ranch, it's easy to sort of feel like you're really there with the characters.”
We can definitely see what they mean, because honestly we felt like cowboy vibes all the way from our sofas. Roll on Ransom Canyon season 2!
