HAIR TRENDS

Punk hair is the anti-beauty movement that's a breath of fresh air

And Beyonce, Florence Pugh and Megan Fox have jumped on board.

We all know trends are cyclical, but what sets punk hair apart from ‘80s crimps or ’90s blow dries, is that the aesthetic is more about feeling, expression, rebellion and individualism, than it is about following the crowd – which really, makes it more of an anti-trend.

It feels like every day there's a new hair trend coined on TikTok: butterfly layers, the wolf cut, cowgirl copper, the jellyfish cut, the U Cut. It's fast-paced and perpetual, but one thing is clear: individuality is in and one-size fits all trends don't really land like perhaps they once did.

Even so, punk hair falls into its very own subsection. It has a defiance that mainstream chops simply don't have. The whole agenda is to go against the grain and subvert expectations. And, there must be something in the water because, since it's peak in the 1970's, that mutinous mood has rolled back around.

This time, though, the modern take on punk hair feels a little more low-key. Rather than trying to make a provocative statement, it sees individuals luxuriate comfortably in their own style, veering off the beaten beauty track into less chartered territory and feeling their way to an offbeat and original chop that fits.

Florence Pugh and Doja Cat are great examples of this. Florence buzzed her hair back for an acting role last year but has maxed out on experimenting with creative cuts like colourful buzzcuts, mini spikes, pixie cuts and bixie cuts.

Likewise, Doja shaved her hair (and brows) off because: why the hell not. In a true punk f*** you to the patriarchy, she explained: "I make hit after hit after hit and you all want me to look f***able for you? Go f*** yourselves." Later she expanded further on Instagram live, explaining she never wears her natural hair down, explaining: "I don't even sport it, so I'm shaving it off. There's no point. I've never felt so f***ing happy, like ... it's very funny how much of an effect taking my hair off my head has positively influenced me." And, since buzzing her hair back, Doja has experimented with icy crops, teensy platinum curls, a shoulder-length micro-fringe black wig and shaggy white blonde waves.

Punk's audacity has even inspired other celebrity fans, like Beyoncé, who took the opportunity – while celebrating the release of her new brand Cecred on the front cover of CR Book – to experiment with alternative hairstyles (via wigs). She tried out a two-tone skunk mullet, an ‘M’ shape vampy fringe with jet black curls and another blonde and caramel XXL mullet.

And for some Punk Lite, Megan Fox has been embracing punky colour-play with rose and lemon sorbet coloured hair paired with dirty black roots and messy updos piled high on her head.

She's also been experimenting with grungy greasy-looking strands.
