Three decades ago, a Kuwaiti family fell in love with an untouched plot of land surrounded by the rusty red cliffs of Praia da Falésia. In 1992, a vision for an award-winning luxury resort was set in motion and now, 30 years later, The Pine Cliffs Resort is home to exquisite hospitality and frequently referred to as ‘the Algarve’s hidden jewel and transient escape from the day-to-day.’
Only 30 minutes from Faro Airport, this seaside resort is set on 178 acres of land, made up of the Pine Cliff Hotel, Ocean Suites, Apartments and Villas. It has classic Portuguese touches with a nod to Arabic influences architecturally throughout. Unique to Pine Cliffs location the resort is just above the Falésia, the longest stretch of sand in the Algarve, running almost four miles along the edge of the Atlantic. The beach is one of the best we’ve experienced.
Pine Cliffs is part of the Marriot’s luxury collection. Although the typically coastal aesthetic is a nod to the resort's environment, it is the traditional Portuguese accents, such as the yellow, blue and white patterned tiles, that create such an authentic vibe within the hotel. In the bedrooms, terracotta tiled floors and fresh white walls enhance the sense of space, a tiled headboard sits above a large, very comfortable, king size bed which overlooks a spacious balcony with panoramic ocean views.
The Pine Cliffs Resort is known as one of the best family resorts in the Algarve. I’d heard about it for years before we visited - and always with warm and glowing tones. It’s the kind of place couples and families visit year after year, thanks to its seven outdoor pools. Our favourite was the main pool, which has a swim-up bar. There’s also a children’s pool at Porto Pirata, kids club (which we avoided as we were away for a girls’ weekend away), a tucked-away peaceful infinity pool, one at the residences' accommodation, another by the Ocean Suites, and one by the golf course. There is also a heated indoor pool within the health club. We couldn’t fit all the activities on one weekend, but there is literally something for everyone. From tennis at Annabel Croft Tennis Academy, to golf at the Pine Cliffs Golf Course overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; of which is attached The Golf Academy and Pro Shop open to everything a beginner to pro golfer might need.
The Serenity Spa, The Art of Well Being, is also housed at Pine Cliffs and has been awarded “Europe’s Best Wellness Spa” thanks to its 13 treatment rooms, a comprehensive Serenity Thermal Oasis, and the signature Serenity Aurum Suite. The spa also offers signature treatments derived from indigenous cultures, healing traditions and ingredients all of which are inspired by the authenticity of the Algarve, including the first CBD spa treatments in Portugal.
The food was delicious! As a group of one vegetarian and one meat eater there were options for both of us and we both loved it. This did help by having 11 diverse restaurants, bars and MIMO Algarve cookery school to eat in, offering everything from seafood to specialty steaks and Japanese. Our favourites restaurants were, Zest, a health focused Low-key spot set among a lemon grove and offering freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and light healthy salads, Corda Café, for casual snacks and O’Grill, a relaxed, family buffet-style restaurant overlooking the pool and golf course.
If you're looking for a hotel to please the whole family, Pine Cliffs Resort is top of my recommendations. Prices range from £230.00 (off peak season) - £495.00 (high season) per night based on 2 adults sharing a deluxe room resort view including breakfast.
