Olivia Rodrigo, is that really you, or did a rocker girl from 1996 time travel to star in your new music video? Despite the fact that the musician has only been in the spotlight for a few years, she's already nailed her signature look: long, dark hair, winged liner, and red lipstick. However, for the new music video for her song “Obsessed,” Olivia deviated from her usual beauty formula with short, choppy bangs that basically turn her into a different person entirely.
In the video, Olivia sings about being jealous of and obsessed with her partner's ex-girlfriend, dressed in her usual punky all-black against the debutantes and pageant queens. Her hair is long and loose as per usual, but enhanced by a fresh set of choppy, perfectly imperfect bangs. The fringe hits just above her brows; this isn't a thick, full retro bang, but instead a choppy, wispier texture to add to the rock chick vibe of the song and video. Two small braids on either side of the bangs really highlight the new fringe and look exactly like something I wore to primary school in the mid-'90s. (Same with those chunky Mary Janes.)
The fringe isn't the only thing different about Olivia in the video; she ditches her usually cherry red lipstick in favour of gloss.
While we don't know if the bangs will stick around or if they're a temporary clip-in style, we do know that barely brow-brushing baby bangs like Olivia's are one of the biggest fringe trends of 2024. If you want to channel your inner ‘90s riot grrl like Olivia, "ask your hairstylist for straight, textured bangs that fall about an inch-and-a-half down from your hairline," says hairstylist René Fris. (A little texturising paste helps get that chunky, piece-y look.) All you need is a pair of Docs and a guitar and you’re ready to rock like Olivia Rodrigo.
Watch the “Obsessed” video below, but don't blame us if you get the urge to cut bangs ASAP.
