Taken in the 60s but left undiscovered until 2012, nine darkly beautiful Polaroid images of Hollywood beauties have been published in the new issue of New York Magazine.

By the artist known only as 'Type 42', the images are inscribed with the name of the actress pictured along with occasionally a film title or, rather more sinisterly, the actress' measurements.

The images were taken of pictures on small screen televisions in dark rooms, on instant film that would not have required professional processing.

So was it a man or a woman who took the pictures?

In her essay Fame Is the Name of the Game…, the artist Cindy Sherman said: "We could assume it was a man since almost all the images are of women, but perhaps this was a woman trying to understand her role models."

We'll leave it to you to decide whether it is more likely a man or a woman would crouch in front of a screen in a darkened room capturing images of women and recording their measurements.
