Remember noughties bangs? Way back when, it was simply the fringe every high school girl coveted on the playground. Cut either side of a centre-parting, they were the sharper little sister to the curtain bang favoured by the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Nicole Richie and every Kardashian sister. Instead of a wide, curved, '70s shape, they were slick, straightened and went perfectly with our jumbo hoop earrings.

But since trends are cyclical, we can already see the noughties bang making a return – with a glossy new-gen update, of course. And, leading the charge is Kim Kardashian, who must have searched her own archive to resurrect the hairstyle she was rocking in 2008.

This week, she posted a series of videos to her Instagram Stories, while familiarising herself with a new set of noughties bangs. Her hairstylist, Chris Appleton, cut the new detail in for her ahead of an appearance in LA for her shapewear brand, SKIMS' Valentine's Shop Pop-Up at Westfield Century City. And it's appropriate timing since the fringe looked sultry.

Ruffling her bangs and adding a little extra oomph with some help from the pinch hair hack, Kim filmed a mirror selfie to show fans she was feeling the fresh update. She also pulled her hair half-up to suss out the perfect updo, leaving her fringe loose to frame her face.

And while noughties bangs don't cup or curve cheekbones like curtain bangs, they do offer structure. Straightened flat, the graduated shape tapers from the cheekbone, down to the jawline, creating a more angular, triangular frame from the centre parting to either side of the jaw. Beyond giving some nifty hair contouring, recent renditions offer a cute update on the Y2K aesthetic that's easy to incorporate (especially since some of us have prior experience).
