No mascara makeup is here to disrupt the holy makeup trinity of: mascara, concealer and lip balm. If a celebrity, model or mate is going off-duty, these are the three items that (nine times out of ten), they'll say they can't go without.

In fact, the makeup trinity has become the official face wardrobe of “clean girls” everywhere, perhaps with blush thrown in as an honourable addition. The term “mascara concealer blush and lip balm” has generated millions of views on TikTok with “dutch makeup” also advocating for the same edit of essentials. Now though, it looks as if minimal makeup has undergone a remix, since we've starting noticing one OG member suspiciously absent from the faces of influencers and celebrities on recent outings.

Content creator, Hailey Polk, told followers: “pro tip of the day. Do full glam, do your normal makeup, maybe even a cute little shimmery eye – I have this wet look going on. Bold brow, complementary colours of course, and then no mascara." She goes on to explain: "I know it seems like something's missing, but really, it's chic, it's giving high fashion, I love the effortless look. You can literally have a full face but no mascara and it just – there's something about it. I love it,” she said.

In fact, no mascara has emerged as the top beauty trend this autumn, particularly when combined with a bold lip to create a look that's equal parts soft and strong.

Florence Pugh's long-time makeup artist, Alex Babsky, uploaded a picture of the actress to his Instagram earlier this year with the caption: “Super-fresh @florencepugh today (we even left off mascara 🤭) for Dune: Part 2 press in Mexico City 🇲🇽.”

In the photo, Florence's brows have been brushed up and softly defined. Her lips and cheeks have been given a rosy wash of colour and her eyes appear to have been shaded oh so subtly with a diffused mushroom shadow. But, her lashes are notably bare.

Likewise, during her appearance at this year's Grammy's, Kylie Jenner served up a super pared-back makeup look, forgoing eyeshadow and mascara, having previously expressed: “I think less is more. I’ve really gotten down my full look, it’s still the same look but way less. I’m just embracing my natural beauty, my freckles, and my bushy brows,” in an interview with Hommegirls.

Celebrities like Megan Thee Stallion have taken to sharing much more natural selfies in recent months with glossy lips and even skin tones taking precedence over statement lashes.

And, while these days, Hailey Bieber is rarely seen without one of her dewy Peptide Lip Tints, a spattering of faux freckles and a sweep of blusher, she'll regularly skip mascara.

When we spoke to top makeup artists for our 2024 makeup predictions at the end of last year, they flagged a movement towards a much more subtle flutter. “A soft and natural glam is key,” celebrity makeup artist, Ash K Holm, told GLAMOUR. “We are seeing less salon-style lashes and more natural false lashes. In 2024, your false lashes should be unclockable. Whether you’re going out for brunch or date night, your lashes should look natural and lifted. Just think: your lash but better,” she said. However, it looks as though TikTok and A-listers are taking this trend and running with it.

So, for a 2024 spin on barely-there beauty, it looks as though we can leave our mascara on the bench.
