For Niecy Nash-Betts, her Emmy win on Sunday night was a moment of self-love.
In a rousing acceptance speech after taking home the award for best supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for her role in Dahmer, Nash-Betts exclaimed, “I'm a winner, baby!” She then took a second to reflect on how far she's come.
“You know who I wanna thank?” she said. “I wanna thank me, for believing in me and doing what they said I could not do. And I want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, ‘Go on girl with your bad self! You did that!'"

Niecy Nash-Betts also took the opportunity to shine a light on police misconduct, saying, “I accept this award on behalf of every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet over-policed."
She named Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland as two such women she wanted to honour, as well as Glenda Cleveland, whom she played in Dahmer. Cleveland, a neighbour of Jeffrey Dahmer's, repeatedly tried to raise the alarm to authorities before the serial killer's eventual arrest.
“As an artist, my job is to speak truth to power, and baby, I'm gonna do it until the day I die,” she said.
