What could be better than fashion week in the beautiful New York City sunshine? Over the past week we've been treated to fashion spectacles, theatrical sunsets and multiple Kimye sightings… and there were some pretty great clothes on show too.

From trends to talking points, must have wardrobe updates to FROW newbies, here are our top 10 highlights of New York Fashion Week:

1. Kick Off Show: Givenchy

Opening the week in earnest, the Givenchy show was certainly a spectacular. Lit by a burning sky and combining performance art curated by Marina Abramovic and a huge recycled set jutting out into the river Hudson, the show marked both Tisci's 10-year tenure at Givenchy and the opening of the label's New York flagship on Madison Avenue. It also gave us the opportunity to get a very close look at Kim Kardashian's baby bump clad in sheer lace. Obviously.

2. Colour: Orange is the New Black

Are you ready for an orange suit? Joseph Altuzarra certainly is. Prabal Gurung is equally enamoured with the sunrise shade, showing frocks in every shade from peach to tangerine while at BOSS deepest clementine chiffon made for striking cocktail wear.

3. Destination: Totally Tropical Taste

Ever fancied a jaunt to Hawaii? How about a trip to the Caribbean? New York's designers were similarly smitten with the idea of island life, an escape perhaps from the troubles and strife of the daily grind. Or perhaps they just fancy a lovely holiday. Tommy Hilfiger brought palms and clear blue waters to Manhattan with a collection which included Rasta hats to silk bombers emblazoned with the word Mustique. Victoria Beckham featured Hawaiian hibiscus prints while bucket hats and crochet vests were also spotted at BCBG Max Azria.

Bell, trumpet, leg o' mutton: the sleeves of the season came in all shapes and sizes. The key was the length - totally covering the hand and elongating the arm to robot-like proportions. Our favourites included Derek Lam's split seam sleeves and Proenza Schouler's covered button cuffs.

5. Print: Check Mate

Forget your spots or stripes (ok, there were some American flag references, but you know where I'm going here), because this season it's all about the check. At J Crew, we saw clashing checked trousers and shirts finished with checked sandals while both Suno and Victoria Beckham went for more bold, graphic checks.

6. Talking Point: Street Style

Without either the Lincoln Centre backdrop or street style bible Style.com to reference, the pavement circus was slightly deflated this season. Not that there weren't plenty of covetable looks on the street - it's just no one seemed to know where to look to find them. Has street style reached its zenith? Watch this space, but see our favourite looks here.

7. Update: Robe de Chambre

Can't be bothered to get dressed next season? No worries! Next spring, it's all going to be able the chic hotel robe. At Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci showed silk tuxedo style robes while Thakoon took it a step further with rope fastened gowns. We're calling it lazy chic, because why not?

8. Beauty: The Perm

Bin those straighteners because this season it's all about the curl. And when we say curl, we don't mean bedhead waves - we mean proper corkscrew ringlets. For the OTM look check out model Mica Arganaraz whose curly do is the blueprint. In addition several black models kept their hair natural with Maria Borges speaking about the relief of keeping her close cropped 'fro untreated.

9. NU-FROW: Lewis Hamilton

Sometimes it's the most unlikely faces that you don't seem to be able to avoid on the FROW. This New York fashion week it was a newly blonde Lewis Hamilton who appeared omnipresent. Why? We couldn't tell you - perhaps he's considering doing a Kanye.

10. The Event: Premiere Marc Jacobs

Lights, camera, Marc Jacobs. Always the cherry on top of NYFW, Marc Jacobs closed the season in style, showing at the iconic Ziegfield movie theatre. With models (including Emily Ratajkowski, Beth Ditto and Bella Hadid) walking a red carpet outside the theatre as if for a film premiere, the public were offered access to Jacobs' red, white and blue collection. A masterstroke of publicity as well as a beautifully executed collection, Jacobs reigns supreme as the king of New York fashion.
