Devi fans, listen up: Never Have I Ever season 3 is just around the corner, landing on Netflix this Friday!

Yup, you can safely circle 12 August in your diaries as the dates to be reunited with Mindy Kaling's hilarious and heartfelt coming of age high school comedy. When the first season arrived on Netflix in April 2020, it was the absolute gem that got us through the grim beginnings of lockdown – and we were equally enamoured with season 2 last year.

We literally cannot wait to catch up with this bunch of characters – including protagonist Devi Vishwakumar, her quirky best pals Eleanor and Fabiola, plus her marvellous family dynamic – which since last season includes her grandma Nirmala, the mother of her late father Mohan, who has come to live with them.

Trailer

While we await the Never Have I Ever season 3 launch with bated breath, we can watch the trailer for clues for what to expect.

It introduces the debut of ‘Daxton’ – ie Devi & Paxton. After two seasons of on-off romance, they pair have officially decided to power on ahead with their relationship – and the opening sequence shows them walking into their high school holding hands while others gawp.

And it seems Devi is struggling with the social pressure – we see a clip of a classic ‘toilet’ scene where Devi sits in a cubicle overhearing girls in her class say catty things about the relationship. Later, the trailer cuts to a heated conversation between her and Paxton, where she says ‘No one else thinks we make any sense'.

We also see shots of Devi high-fiving her grandma Nirmala while saying ‘YAS QUEEN’ (confirming our suspicions that Nirmala will take on a prominent role in this season… yay!).

And, because the course of true love never runs smooth, apparently, we witness the arrive of an attractive new ‘Indian kid’ arriving on the scene – played by Anirudh Pisharod. Will this cause trouble for Daxton, or will he instead catch the attention of cousin Kamala (who seems quite taken with him?). Watch this space.

Prior to the trailer release, Netflix released a series of sneak peak images which give us a clue of what to expect from Sherman Oaks High student and Indian-American teenager Devi, and her group of friends and family.

Not to get too ahead of ourselves, but it was announced by Netflix in March this year that the show has received “early renewal” for a season 4, too – which is set to premiere in 2023. It will, on the downside, be the final season, they also announced – but hey, we'll navigate that mourning process when we have to. For now: two seasons and potentially 20 episodes of goodness are ahead of us!

Plot

From the looks of things, we can expect plenty of action from the next season, including fresh drama from the Devi-Paxton-Ben love triangle: Paxton being her long-term crush, while Ben is the close friend and one-time frenemy with which she's had an on-off romance.

The images show Devi walking hand in hand with Paxton while their fellow students look on, shocked, and having what looks like a tense conversation with Ben by the lockers.

The sneak peak pictures also include Devi's brilliant friend Eleanor (played by Ramona Young) and last season's new-kid-on-the block Aneesa (Megan Suri) – nicknamed “Devi 2.0”, together with her family, mum Dr Nalini Vishwakumar (played by Poorna Jagannathan) and cousin Kamala (Richa Moorjani).

Also included in the images is Devi's other best pal, Fabiola Torres (played by Lee Rodriguez), whom last season was ousted from her robotics team place after she stopped turning up to sessions. Thankfully, her character hasn't been ousted from the show, too!

It's confirmed from the trailer that we will see the return of Devi's terrific plant-loving grandma Nirmala, played by Ranjita Chakravarty.

A newcomer will be joining this season, according to Deadline: we'll meet Des, “an Indian American teen who’s as smart as Devi but goes to an elite private school” – played by Anirudh Pisharod.

Oh, and there's Paxton's friend Trent (Benjamin Norris), with whom Eleanor slow-danced with at the end of the last season – cue a potential romance plot for season 3.
