Light brown hair colours can be tricky to nail, but the “milky brunette” trend is here to help you strike perfect balance. Looking for a tone that’s not too rich, but also doesn’t venture into bronde territory? We’ve got you covered.

“Milky brown is a soft, creamy brunette with natural warmth and a subtle, luminous glow,” says Laura Elliott, stylist and educator at Neäl & Wølf. “It offers a polished yet effortless look that works for all hair types and makes it the perfect shade for spring.” This colour trend also has range: It can be worn fully blended or dimensional (think: the moment you swirl a splash of milk into your iced coffee).

“The popularity of this shade comes from its low-maintenance appeal, and we’ve seen celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid embrace similar soft, dimensional brunette tones,” Elliot continues. Since the look combines both warm and cool tones, it can complement any skin tone. And aside from its natural-looking base, milky brunette also favours low-maintenance colour techniques, making it a long-lasting and budget-friendly option.

How to choose a flattering milky brunette tone

Like many hair colour trends that enhance natural tones, milky brunette is a universally flattering colour. “Milky brunette focuses on sophisticated naturalness, combining both cool and warm tones to create a soft, elegant colour that brightens the face,” Elliot says. “Blended highlights add depth and dimension, while its mix of beige, sand and vanilla undertones make it an incredibly versatile shade that can be adapted to suit any skin tone.” That said, there are ways to customise it to best suit your features.

Specifically? “Warmer, caramel tones enhance medium and olive complexions, while cooler, ashier tones complement fairer skin for a naturally radiant finish,” Elliot continues. The milky brunette treatment also works on variety of hair types. It adds movement and dimension to straight, fine hair and highlights the natural shape of thicker curls. As for which haircuts it works particularly well with? Elliot’s favourites include preppy bobs and long layers.

How to ask for milky brunette colour at the salon

This colour trend’s name may speak for itself, but it can’t hurt to bring some specific requests to the salon. “Milky brunette is all about soft, diffused warmth rather than heavy contrast,” Elliot says. “To achieve it, a stylist will typically start with a rich brunette base and weave in very fine, delicate highlights using a balayage or micro-babylight technique.”

While light brown hair can sometimes read ashy or mushroom-toned, highlights are a great way to add a little warmth to the overall look, especially for spring and summer. “The highlights are toned with creamy, neutral or slightly beige shades to soften the colour and create that ‘milky’ effect,” Elliot says. “The result is a glossy brunette with subtle dimension that catches the light beautifully while still looking natural and effortless.”

One thing to keep in mind: This subtle upgrade is low-maintenance and high-payoff; if your hair is naturally medium to light brown, expect to feel more refreshed than transformed.

How to maintain milky brunette hair

Spring 2026 is leaning into maintenance colour trends, from rooty blondes to ‘quiet silver’ grey-blending techniques. Milky brunette fits right in, as a subtle colour upgrade that favours an easy grow-out. “If you’re naturally brunette or even dark blonde, milky brunette shades grow out seamlessly without creating harsh contrasts — meaning fewer salon visits,” Elliot says.

Still, Elliot says that a good home hair care routine is critical to maintaining a milky brunette’s luminosity. Specifically, she recommends using a hydrating hair mask once weekly, prioritising sulphate-free (non-drying) shampoo and conditioner, and trying out illuminating products like Neäl & Wolf’s Glow Super Shine Spray.

While the milky brunette colour gives you a bit more agency with your touch-up timing, a quick salon visit can revive it instantly. “If you don’t mind the occasional trip, I also suggest getting a toner or gloss treatment every 8–12 weeks to keep the colour looking fresh,” Elliot says.
