The most rock ’n’ roll couple to emerge in recent years is undoubtedly Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel.
Bechtel is a New York–based model and content creator, as well as the lead singer of pop-punk band Nasty Cherry, although the group has reportedly been relatively inactive since 2021. Healy, of course, is the lead singer of The 1975 and is well known for courting controversy.
According to Bechtel’s 2024 profile in HommeGirls magazine, she and Healy tried to meet for four years before they finally crossed paths.
Fans have long speculated that the pair were brought together through a bit of backstage matchmaking. Bechtel was reportedly hand-picked for Nasty Cherry by Charli XCX, who is also engaged to The 1975 drummer and Healy’s close friend, George Daniel.
In an April 2024 interview with Homme Girls, Bechtel revealed that the pair met when she went to watch The 1975 perform. “He came to LA and we’ve been in love ever since,” she said.

Gabbriette Bechtel confirmed on 12 June that Matty Healy had proposed, debuting her black diamond engagement ring on social media. She shared a photo of the rumoured £10,000 black diamond sparkler on her wedding ring finger, which he later reposted. “Marrying The 1975 is very brat,” she said, referencing Charli XCX’s album Brat.
“I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged,” Healy’s mother, Denise Welch, said during an episode of Loose Women. “They went over to see their friends in New York, and I woke up this morning to find they put it on Instagram — Instagram official! He’s got engaged to Gabriella Bechtel, Gabbriette as she’s known. I couldn’t be more thrilled. She’s from Los Angeles, she’s absolutely gorgeous.”
Welch added, “She is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law, and so I’m thrilled.”
In an interview with E! News, Bechtel further detailed the Matty Healy relationship timeline, sharing a little tea about how the pair fell in love. Apparently, they bonded over good music and even better food.
After Swift dropped The Tortured Poets Department, Healy’s aunt Debbie Dedes said he wasn’t concerned about the apparent diss tracks.
“He’s very happy in his new relationship, so I’m sure he will be focusing on that,” Dedes told Daily Mail. “She writes about all her relationships, doesn’t she? I don’t think it will come as a shock to him at all… He will not be surprised by the song. Him and her know what went on.”
Denise Welch posted a picture of the two of them visiting her at the Hope Mill Theatre and captioned it, “Lovely to have the family in to see mum at work.” She’s already part of the family!
Hard launch alert! On 27 December, Bechtel posted photobooth pictures of the pair posing like the adorable couple they are. A few days later, Greggs became part of the relationship canon when Healy shared a video of Bechtel trying a Greggs sausage roll for the first time — genuinely a rite of passage.
She’s clearly a hit with the family too. In October 2023, Bechtel shared a snap of herself wearing a leather thong and apron on Instagram, with Healy's mum Denise Welch commenting, “That’s exactly how I hope to look in mine when it arrives!”
Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel were first linked in September. On 5 September, the pair were spotted out and about in New York City, sharing some classic PDA.
