Gigi Hadid may have sold me on mesh ballet flats, but Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnson are demonstrating just how versatile the trendy summer shoe can be.
Both stylish actors recently packed Alaïa’s famous mesh Mary Janes on separate trips to Ibiza, with Johnson kicking things off in a completely unexpected fashion. While it may not be the most practical beach look, the 35-year-old Materialists star certainly made a case for the silk skirt cover-up, pairing her black mesh flats with a floral Doên skirt.
The beige and blue skirt may be dry-clean only, but she still managed to give the look her signature laid-back aura with a white triangle bikini top and an unfussy braid, which she covered with a two-toned baseball cap.
Think of it as the bare-nails trend, but with a twist.
Just a few days later, Margot Robbie wore the very same shoes with a much more classic vacation look, though that descriptor should not be mistaken for boring.
Playing with different levels of opacity throughout her ensemble, Robbie matched her black mesh ballet flats with a black summer dress that featured a fitted boatneck top and a flowing sheer skirt, topping everything off with a massive circular raffia bag in a natural straw tone. The only thing larger than Robbie’s ludicrously capacious Le Spiaggia Round Bag by Jacquemus is its £599 price tag, though various other brands like Staud and Soraya Hennessy offer similar oversized totes at various price points.
The only common denominator between Johnson’s and Robbie’s chic vacation looks is their beloved mesh ballet flats, which both actors have worn on multiple occasions over the years.
Though Alaïa first debuted its mesh Mary Jane flats in May 2022, the trend doesn’t seem to be losing steam, which is good news for all of our summer wardrobes.
