Louis reveals that he thought he was the "forgettable" member of One Direction.
The 25-year-old said: "Niall, for example. Heâs the most lovely guy in the world.
"Zayn, back in the day. He could relate to me on a nerves level. In the first year we were both the least confident. But Zayn has a fantastic voice and for him it was always about owning that.
"Liam always had a good stage presence, same as Harry, theyâve both got that ownership. Harry comes across very cool."
Louis was keen for the four-piece to stay together in 2015, before they announced their internet-breaking hiatus.
He explains that it was really only in the final year of being in the band that he found his groove and became a confident performer and he wasnât ready for the band to go their separate ways.
Describing the conversation they had about the break, he said: "It wasnât necessarily a nice conversation. I could see where it was going."
Louis told the magazine he initially did not plan on becoming a solo singer.
"If you'd asked me a year or 18 months ago, 'Are you going to do anything as a solo artist?' I'd have said, 'Absolutely not,'" he said.
Recalling the 2010 competition, Louis revealed he was not given a solo part in any of the bandâs performances.
He said: âA lot of people can take the piss out of that. But when you actually think about how that feels, standing on stage every single week, thinking: âWhat have I really done to contribute here?.â
The Doncaster-born performer presumed he was known as âthe kid wearing espadrilles, stood inât backâ.
Louis said the death of his mum Johannah Deakin felt like his One Direction âluck was running outâ.
Recalling the moment his mum told him she would never recover from leukaemia, he said: â[I was]at Jamie Vardyâs wedding of all places.
âTalk about your places, for something super-traumatic. My mum told me, uh, yeah, that she was definitely terminal.â
Louis says that he and Johannah had an extremely close relationship which he attributes to how close they were in age â theyâre relationship was so tight that he even told her when he lost he virginity.
He said: âI remember the day I lost my virginity. I hadnât even told any of my mates and I was, like: âMum? I know this is really weird. But Iâve got to tell youâŠâ I remember thinking this is a bizarre conversation to be having with your mother. But itâs testament to how comfortable she made me.â
Louis fulfilled mum-of-sixâs Johannahâs dying wish by performing his debut single on The X Factor after she told him: âYouâve got to f***ing do it, itâs as simple as that.â
He recalled: 'I remember saying to her: "Mum, how the fk do you expect me to do this now?" And she didn't swear much, my mum. She'd always tell me off for swearing. And this time she was like: "You've got to f*ing do it, it's as simple as that." It was football manager, team talk stuff.'
