The Emmy Awards are officially back, and to celebrate, Laverne Cox has opted to recreate one of the most iconic outfits of all time.
The Inventing Anna star walked the red carpet wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier gown from the Fall 2022 couture collection, which featured a highly-structured bodice with a cone bra, oversized shoulders and hip pads, and a hood. The design features vertical lines of gemstones embroidered into the gown, which are brought together with a chunky silver zip.
The cone bra is a signature feature of Jean Paul Gaultier, which crops up in his designs time and time again. Most famously, of course, Madonna wore a pink conical bra by the designer on the opening night of her Blonde Ambition tour in Japan. You can take a look at the design here:
In an interview with the New York Times, Gaultier reflected on how the origins of the collaboration: “When Madonna first called me in 1989, it was two days before my ready-to-wear show, and I thought my assistant was joking,” he explained. “I was a big fan. She knew what she wanted – a pinstripe suit, the feminine corsetry. Madonna likes my clothes because they combine the masculine and the feminine.”

Like Madonna, Laverne is a long-time fan of Jean Paul Gaultier. In January earlier this year, she attended the Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2022 show wearing a super-sheer gown and a bejewelled fishnet headpiece.
Teach us your ways, Laverne.
