Leggings are not trousers, no, but Kylie Jenner just made a really convincing case for them being date night-appropriate on her recent outing with boyfriend Timothée Chalamet.
Kylie and boyfriend Timothée were papped holding hands in Paris, where Timothée had just attended the premiere of his latest film A Complete Unknown. The lovebirds were returning from dinner at one of legendary chef Cyril Lignac's restaurants – and Kylie was seen wearing a floaty, organza strappy top that cascaded over the hips like a dress, which she paired with leggings and black pumps. Timothée, continuing his method, red carpet dressing streak, had on a Bob Dylan-esque skinny scarf that he matched with a cap and plaid bomber jacket.
Now, the City of Lights is arguably one of the most romantic cities in the world, but it is also the global fashion capital – so there's a lot of pressure to look très chic in Paris. Ordinarily most Parisians might turn their noses up at someone wearing leggings out-out, but Kylie Jenner, the fashion icon that she is, managed to make the casual athleisure staple look oh-so-sleek by elevating them with a dramatic top and heels.
After all, a good outfit is all about balance. Leggings and a hoodie with trainers? Not-so-chic. Leggings and a couture-worthy top and pointy, black stilettos? Good enough to wear to date night at a Michelin-starred restaurant with one of the biggest actors in the world. At least, according to Kylie Jenner.
