We couldn't stop wearing them back in 2017, and there was no fashionista – from Olivia Palermo to Gigi Hadid – who didn't have them in her closet, but the side stripe trouser disappeared from trend reports and wardrobes almost as quickly as they appeared. The epitome of ‘smart casual’, they were perfect for every occasion and paired with just about every shoe. And they're exactly the trend that Kristen Stewart has just rescued.

Attending the Sundance Film Festival – where the actress presented her new film Love Lies Bleeding directed by Rose Glass – Kristen opted for comfort and rebellion, two key characteristics that epitomise her personal style (and that she's always seemed far more herself in than big red carpet gowns and towering heels).

Known – and adored – for it, she's probably one of the very few people who could convince us that a revival of this trouser style would be a good idea.

Don't get us wrong, we adored these trousers once upon a time and we styled them up for any and every occasion we could. We wore them to the office with loafers, to dinners with boots and for a casual weekend with friends, we paired them with our favourite sneakers.

They were comfortable, sophisticated and very easy to wear. We didn't, however, expect them to come back so quickly.

Now that we are immersed in the pants-and-tights and wide-leg trouser trends, we didn't expect this twist. But hey, that's fashion.

If you're in need of a style cue, note that Kristen Stewart seems to have stripped out all the formality from this old trend and champions a much more relaxed look than those of 2017. A basic T-shirt and a pair of favourite sneakers – from adidas, in this case – will be enough to give the trousers all the limelight. Up for it?
