With the second series of HBO’s And Just Like That… about to come to an end, we’re still waiting on that promised Samantha scene.
Earlier this year it was revealed that Kim Cattrall would reprise her iconic role as the sex-positive Samantha Jones from Sex and the City (SATC) in And Just Like That…’s (AJLT)’s second season finale.
It was news no one saw coming, after Cattrall ardently said she would not be returning ahead of the show’s premiere in 2021. It was later revealed that her cameo would be just one scene, and that she did not film it alongside any of her former castmates.
Yet, with the episode set to air next week, fans are convinced that Cattrall is only making an appearance in order for her character to be killed off from the show once and for all.
“Anyone else think Samantha’s “And just like that…” return will be to tell Carrie her cancer is back and they then kill her off?” one person wrote on Twitter.
Samantha was diagnosed with breast cancer in SATC’s final season, and some people are speculating her AJLT scene might be calling Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) to tell her that the cancer has returned.
"He's not somebody you can be casual with," Parker tells Glamour.

While we don’t know for certain what will happen with Cattrall’s role (although we highly doubt we’ll ever have Samantha back on a permanent basis), when asked about Cattrall’s cameo, showrunner Michael Patrick King kept coy about her scene.
“I am a little bit upset that you even know about it because I really wanted you to be sitting there watching the show, see Carrie look at her phone and all of a sudden seeing Samantha,” King told Entertainment Tonight.
“But there's a secret. You don't know why she's there and what's going to happen. I wouldn't even want you to know she was coming back this time, so I am not gonna say anything about Samantha in the future."
It wouldn’t be the first time the series has killed off a major SATC character. In the first episode of the first season (spoiler ahead), Carrie’s husband Mr Big (Chris Noth) died from a heart attack, and much of the first season is spent with Carrie attempting to overcome her grief.
The show indicated a couple of messages shared between Carrie and Samantha at the time, with Samantha’s absence being put down to her moving to London. Yet, this upcoming scene will be the first time we see Samantha’s face on the show.
Cattrall previously revealed why she wouldn’t join the cast full time, telling Variety: “Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago? And the job didn’t get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters?”
We really, really love to see it.

“Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought that’s smart. We’re not repeating ourselves. And then the movie to end all the loose ends. And then there’s another movie. And then there’s another movie?”
Cattrall referenced the third SATC that was in talks to be made a few years ago but she refused to come back as Samantha then too. However, she added that AJLT is “basically” the third film in terms of the storylines.
While she may just return for one scene in this series, the SATC-era Samantha will always live on as one of TV’s best and most iconic characters.
