Something about the look Kaia Gerber served up on the Fourth Annual Academy Museum Gala red carpet in L.A. looked very familiar… well, in a throwback kind of way.
The model channeled old-school Edwardian glamour with a floor-length black chiffon dress, complete with intricate beading along the neckline, capped sleeves and even a floaty train.
Paired with a dainty silver choker around her neck and drop earrings, it looked exactly like the sort of outfit we might have seen Kate Winslet wear aboard the Titanic as Rose in the cult 90s film. In fact, in the dancing scene in the film, we see Kate wear something ultra similar with a cap-sleeved beaded ball gown, styled almost identically with a silver choker and delicate dangly earrings.
We're not sure if that was the exact reference Kaia was going for, but she shared some of the thinking behind her outfit in an Instagram caption where she explained she wanted to tap into a “gothic Hollywood glamour” aesthetic and teamed up with Givenchy's new creative director, Sarah Burton, to dig out an archival number from the '90s that replicated old-school appeal.

“[T]hank you for a beautiful and inspiring evening @theacademy 🖤 and thank you beyond measure to Sarah Burton for diving deep into the archives and making all my gothic hollywood glamour dreams come true. @givenchy fall ‘97 couture (!!!!!!!!) tears of love and gratitude to sarah and the whole givenchy team always,” Kaia said.
Is it a coincidence that Titanic came out in 1997? Maybe, maybe not – but in fact, Kate Winslet also wore a Givenchy gown to the Oscars in 1998, when she was nominated for Best Actress in the film.

As for Kaia Gerber's glam, the model and actor worked with celebrity hair stylist, Bryce Scarlett, to create vintage half-up tumbling waves with face-framing kiss curls, while her softly defined makeup was achieved by Jenny Cho using all Addiction Tokyo cosmetics (which we're still patiently waiting to drop in the UK).
But, while the archival film look is perfect for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures red carpet – which fundraises to support the museum’s dedicated cinema exhibits – it could work as a very vintage Halloween costume, too.
