According to Deadline, the 59-year-old's new movie role centres on King Louis XV's last royal mistress, Jeanne du Barry, at the Court of Versaille, after Madame de Pompadour. She was born into poverty and ruthlessly worked her way up society's ranks by becoming the King's lover.
Production for the film kicked off on 26 July and has been shooting in multiple locations in France, including Versailles and Paris.
The French-language period drama will be directed by Maïwenn, who will also star in the project as the titular Barry. The cast also includes Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory and India Hair.
This new film project comes after Johnny Depp won his infamous legal battle against ex-wife Amber in June.
The former Pirates of the Caribbean star sued Heard for defamation linked to an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, entitled "I spoke up against sexual violence and faced our culture's wrath".
Depp brought the case against Heard for $50 million, and she counter-sued. The jury unanimously agreed that Heard libelled her ex-husband by writing the opinion piece and that she did so, knowing that it could have a negative impact on his career.
Jeanne du Barry is expected to hit cinemas in 2023 before an exclusive Netflix France release in 2024.
Before that, it was Winona Forever.
