Wondering how to use boob tape? You're not alone. With the festive season upon us, thoughts are turning towards mulled wine, minced pies, and, of course, party outfits. Sequinned, velveted, embroidered, shimmering — the fashion at this time of year takes a real turn into high camp, with a ‘more is more’ approach adopted by all.

And even though the weather outside might be frightful, fashion always seems to take on a sexier (read: skimpier) vibe at this time of year — hemlines get shorter, necklines scoop lower, and designs like backless dresses become more popular in shops. However, with that comes an age-old dilemma: What to do with our boobs?

Yes, there's always the option to bring out the Nice Bra that sits at the back of the drawer, but sometimes straps can just spoil an outfit, plus bras can be uncomfortable at the best of times, never mind when they're fancy ones with hard wiring and lacy straps that cut into the skin.

Then you have sticky bras, but sometimes they don't stick on to skin properly, and can look lumpy under clothing. So, with that in mind, it's time to bring out the third option… boob tape.

How to use boob tape

The good thing about boob tape is that there are so many different ways to use it, and with so many different outfits, too. The strength of the tape helps hold breasts in place securely all night, but also allows you the flexibility and comfort to move with ease.

It can be used differently for every person and every different size of breasts, so there's not really one set way to use it, which is why it's so great.

However, if you're using it for the first time, here's a quick guide on how to get started:

  1. Start with the tape underneath each breast and bring it over the breast vertically, making sure you don't bring the tape too high in front of the neckline of your outfit.
  2. Add some pieces horizontally as needed to provide support, but make sure that no tape is poking out at the sides.

How to use boob tape for low-cut, backless dresses

Low-cut, backless dresses bring up a dilemma when deciding what underwear to wear — there's essentially nowhere to hide straps or clasps, so how to make sure you look supported, especially for those with larger chests? Boob tape will work perfectly.

As shown above, boob tape can be used vertically, as well as at the sides to help provide a lot of lift and support.

  1. The key is to measure with the tape before you apply it, and keep the sticky bit attached to the paper as you unroll it over your skin — that way it's not sticking to anywhere you don't want it to. First, apply nipple covers, then apply tape in vertical strips, measuring first to make sure the strip isn't too long.
  2. Apply short strips horizontally to make sure you have the supported needed at the side — especially as you'll not have the protection of fabric at the back of your dress.
  3. You don't need to stick to just one vertical strip — two or three can help you feel more secure, especially for those at a D cup or bigger.

Boob tape is your best friend when it comes to tops that show a bit of cleavage. The dramatic cut of a V-neck top is what you want to the focus to be on, not any bra straps getting in the way. Here's how to make the tape work for you with a low-cut top:

  1. First, apply nipple covers, then lift and shape breasts with vertical strips from the bottom up. Tip — slightly pull the tape inwards as well as upwards, which will give the appearance of more shapely cleavage.
  2. Follow the shape of your top with the tape, especially for U or X-shaped plunge tops.
  3. Apply extra strips on top of what you've already applied, as needed for extra security.

Strapless dresses or bandeau tops are the hardest to use tape with, as you don't have a top strap to hide the vertical lines of the tape with. However, with some know-how, you can still get enviable lift using boob tape if you don't want to wear a strapless bra. Here's how:

  1. Use nipple covers, then apply one length of tape in a diagonally from one breast across to the other lifting and holding breasts in place as you place the tape, aiming for an X design across both breasts. Make sure the tape isn't too high at either end, so that it is still sitting underneath the edge of your dress or top.
  2. Add extra strips on top if needed for extra protection.

And with that, you can now enjoy partying this Christmas party season, safe in the knowledge that the only things falling out might be your besties. Your boobs, though? They're safely taped up, thanks very much.
